Harvest and Herb Festival is back!

Put the Harvest and Herb date on this year's calendar. As always, it's the third Saturday in September.

After a one-year absence, the Ada Area Chamber of Commerce's Harvest and Herb Festival is back, according to Deb Curlis, chamber director.

This year’s festival is from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 18. As in past year’s, it will fill Ada’s Main Street from Highland to College. Main Street will be closed at State Route 235 all the way to State Route 81.

Norman Rex was former Ada mayor and council member

Retired dean of engineering technologies at Rhodes State College • Active in countless community events

Norman J. Rex, 86, passed away on Friday, April 16, 2021 at 2:55 p.m. at the Memorial Hospital, Marysville.

He was born on June 27, 1934, in Lima, Ohio, to the late Dick O. and Margaret (Johnston) Rex. On Oct. 7, 1956, Norman married Kay Maxson and she survives in Ada. They were coming up on their 65th wedding anniversary.

Also surviving are his four children: Sylvia (Ron) Jurcak of Burton, Valerie (Jamie) Hall of Ada, Clinton (Tracy) Rex of Marietta, Ga., and Kevin Rex of Ottawa; and seven grandchildren: Jessica Jurcak, Andrew Jurcak, Noelle (Mike) Thielman, Ethan Hall, Kyle Rex, Nate Hall and Colin Rex.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Craig O. Rex.

School board in special meeting Tuesday

Will conduct hearing under the disciplinary procedure for an employee

The Ada school board will hold a special meeting at 5 p.m., Tuesday, April 20, for the purpose of conducting a hearing under the disciplinary procedure for an employee.

It is anticipated that the board will hold the meeting in executive session. The meeting will take place in the board office.

Laboring behind the scenes

Medical Laboratory Professionals Week celebration at ONU with several events and virtual 5-K

They labor behind the scenes, out of the limelight that showcases physicians and nurses who work directly with patients, but medical laboratory scientists perform vital work that the majority of disease diagnosis and treatments rely upon.

The COVID-19 pandemic has only magnified the need for such professionals.

Hence, the reason for Medical Laboratory Professionals Week, scheduled for April 18-24. The annual event, organized by representatives from 17 national clinical laboratory organizations, seeks to raise awareness and recruit for this in-demand field. 

Rich Prater was a 1985 Upper Scioto Valley HS graduate

 Johnny Richard “Rich” Prater, Jr., 53, passed away on Thursday, April 15, 2021, at 3:01 p.m. at Lima Memorial Health System.

He was born on May 13, 1967, in Lima, Ohio, to John R. and Evelyn (Downey) Prater, Sr., and they survive in Harrod.  

Rich was a 1985 graduate of Upper Scioto Valley. Rich served in the Army Reserves from 1984 to 1990. He worked as a mechanic most of his life. Rich loved growing a garden, his children and grandchildren were most important to him, along with his dog Tippy.

Elida, Lima Senior, St. Marys on next week's schedule

ADA - The host Ada tennis team lost 5-0 to powerhouse Shawnee on a chilly, windy Thursday at the park courts.

The Bulldog netters dropped to 2-5 after their third straight loss to a bigger Western Buckeye League opponent. Shawnee improved to 9-1 with the convincing victory.

All five varsity matches were decided in straight sets. 

Ada senior Miranda Wills (3-4) lost at first singles to freshman Gabe Burke. 

Bulldog junior southpaw Dexter Woods III (6-1) suffered his first defeat of the season at second singles to sophomore Mason Stahl.     

Allen East stops Ada in softball and baseball

Ridgemont, Upper Scioto, Botkins next for girls • Boys host Ridgemont today

ADA - Host Ada got blanked 5-0 by local traditional arch-rival Allen East in a Northwest Conference softball game marred by wind and cold Thursday evening.

The Lady Bulldogs fell to 5-4 overall and 1-2 in the NWC with the defeat. AE improved to 9-5 (2-0 NWC) with the shutout victory.

AE sophomore Nikki Thaxton hurled a complete game shutout.

The Lady Mustangs scored a run in the top of the first frame. 

In the top of the second, freshman catcher Savana Brooks drilled a two-run homer over the fence in right-center field to build a 3-0 lead.
