4th year pharmacy student involved in anti-cancer agent research

Assisting Dr. David Kinder's study of two plant species and their effectiveness as anti-cancer agents in inhibiting cancer cells’ growth

Throughout his time as a pharmacy student at Ohio Northern University, Abdullah Alsamman has always sought out opportunities to learn about different career paths in pharmacy, including research. 

It was this motivation that led to a valuable opportunity to research anti-cancer potential in plants.

While taking a class with Dr. David Kinder, professor of medicinal chemistry, Abdullah was pleasantly surprised by Kinder’s teaching style, which focused on actively involving students in the learning process in a more direct manner than traditional methods.

Combining a little Bizet with a familiar classic story

Music and a book for an August afternoon.

That's what the Ada Public Library in cooperation wtih the Lima Symphony Orchestra offer to Icon viewers – in video form.

Combining the very familiar musical score of Bizet's "Carmen" to a popular children's book "The Story of Ferdinand," by Munro Leaf, here's the most recent library storytime presentation.

It's the classic tale about a peaceful bull who refuses to fight in the bullfights in Madrid and would rather smell the flowers.

Here's how Ohio schools are reopening

Ohio Governor Mike DeWine provided the following updates on the status of the COVID-19 pandemic in Ohio as of Aug. 11.

RETURN TO SCHOOL
Currently, Ohio has left the decision to individual school districts on how to approach the new school year. 

According to information gathered by the Ohio Department of Education:

• 325 public school districts in Ohio are planning to return to school full-time which equates to approximately 590,000 students. 

Meth lab discovered in Kenton

On Aug. 11 the Hardin County Crime task force executed a search warrant at 520 W. Franklin St., Kenton.

The search resulted in the discovery and removal of a methamphetamine lab. Also, during the search several stolen items were recovered. Criminal tools were also discovered and confiscated. The matter remains under investigation.

The sheriff’s office, Kenton Police and Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation and identification assisted the task force at the scene.

Morgan, Woods, Rush card 54s at NWC opener

DEFIANCE - The Ada golf team played its first Northwest Conference match of the season Tuesday at the Auglaize Golf Club in Defiance.

Allen East won the four-team league event with 161 strokes. Host Paulding was a close second with 165 strokes, followed by Delphos Jefferson (203) and Ada (225).

Jacob Morgan, Dexter Woods and Andrew Rush each carded a round of 54 to pace Ada. Kamron Wilkerson, Geddes Klingler and Jack Baumgartner all tallied rounds of 63 to round out the Bulldog links scores.

The Film Club records welcoming week activities

Students are back.

If there was every any question about Ohio Northern University students returning to campus, the following video answers that affirmatively.

One of the newest organizations on campus, The Film Club created a short video highlighting some of the welcoming week activities. Students returned last week and the first day of classes was Monday.

Ada Schools asks parents to complete transportation form

To create efficient bus routes • first day of school is Monday, Aug. 24

As the school year begin soon, Ada schools ask parents to complete a brief transportation survey by Friday, Aug. 14, according to Meri Skilliter, superintendent.

“In an effort to create efficient bus routes we ask each family to complete our survey identifying your expected transportation method,” she said.
