Jack C. Brown, Jr., 55, died on Sunday, March 3, 2019 at 12:38 p.m. at University Hospitals Ahuja Medical Center, Beachwood, Ohio.

He was born on July 10, 1963, in Chicago, Illinois, to Jack C. and Edna Kay (Rhodes) Brown, Sr. and they survive in Madisonville, Tenn.  On July 12, 1985 Jack married Tami Kindle and she survives in Ada.

Jack worked as a truck driver for the Risinger Trucking Co. He was a 1981 graduate of Kenton High School.

Spring picture day at the Ada Elementary is rescheduled due to the several school day cancellations in February.

The rescheduled date is Monday, March 25.

The Ada High School class of 1969 will hold its 50th reunion from 5 to 9 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 28, at Center on Central (old Hal and Jean’s Restaurant), in Ada.

She invites class members to bring memorabilia to share with classmates.

The owner of this plate takes fishing very seriously. Percid is the name of a fish in the perch family. The Icon saw this plate in an ONU parking lot.

With the calendar reading “March” perhaps the school-delay winter season is behind Ada schools.

Lots of events are on the calendar this month at the school. Here’s an update from the school website:

• This summer, ONU will host its 15th Summer Academic and Honors Institute for gifted high school students who will be freshmen, sophomores, juniors or seniors in 2019-20.

It includes 15 challenging courses in June.  See Mrs. Prater or Mr. Lusk if you are interested.

Annual conservation tillage conference at ONU

Expect 900 visitors to Ada on March 5 and 6. It's the annual Conservation Tillage Conference held at ONU.

A world-renowned scientist is the keynote speaker on the first day of the event.

Christine Jones, an Australian soil ecologist, will be giving the keynote of the annual event with the topic “Building New Topsoil Through the Liquid Carbon Pathway for Long Term Production and Profit.”

Presented at The Freed Center, free and open to the public

“How to Be a Respectable Junkie,” a play by Greg Vovos, will be presented at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 14, in the Freed Center for the Performing Arts at Ohio Northern University. The event is free and open to the public.

Winner of the Ohio Arts Council Individual Excellence Award for Playwriting in 2018, “How to Be a Respectable Junkie” follows the true story of Brian, a heroin addict in his 30s who decides he’s going to take his life so that he no longer has to destroy the lives of those around him.

Hillard Nickles, 82, of Harrod, Ohio, formerly of McGuffey, died on Saturday, March 2, 2019, at 8:20 p.m. at Lima Memorial Health System.

He was born on Aug. 16, 1936, in Mousie, Kentucky, to the late Hubert and Lucy (Wicker) Nickles. On July 26, 1958, Hillard married Halie J. Conley and she survives in Harrod.

Hillard retired after working for 50 years for Rudolph Foods, Westminster.  He attended the McGuffey Freewill Baptist Church.  He was a member of the McGuffey Conservation Club and a former member of the McGuffey Fire Department.  Hillard enjoyed Sprint Car Racing and Bluegrass Music.  He loved his grandchildren and spending time with his family.
