After more than 50 years of writing for newspapers, my career comes to an end with this last story, a fun and frivolous account of Richard the Rooster. Fun and frivolity, every life needs some of that. Too many media reports are full of doom gloom or make you scared to even stick your toe out of the door. Here is the history of Richard the Rooster, a wild cock that makes his home among the residents in the 500 block of South Johnson Street.

ADA - After a slow start, visiting Upper Scioto Valley outscored tournament host Ada by 16 points over the final three periods to post a 44-35 win over their backyard rival in semifinal Border Battle girls basketball tournament action Thursday night.
The Lady Bulldogs fell to 1-8 with the defeat. Meanwhile, the Lady Rams improved to 1-7 with their first win and advanced to the second annual tourney finals Saturday against Allen East.
Ada raced to an 11-2 lead as sophomore post Megan Light netted three inside baskets. But USV switched to a 2-3 zone defense and the Bulldogs were unable to solve it.

The Polar Bears (3-8 overall) were led by senior All-American Ryan Bruns with 22 points and 9 rebounds. Bruns scored 13 points and grabbed seven rebounds in a solid first half as Ohio Northern led 33-31 at intermission.

The Polar Bears (7-4 overall) were led by junior Abby Weeks (West Chester/Mount Notre Dame) with 15 points, sophomore Emily Brock (Akron/Revere) with 14 points and senior Alyssa Manley (Lima/Bath) with 10 points.
The Lady Reds (5-5 overall) got 22 points from Maggie Berigan.

The University Club II of Hardin County awards one $1,000 scholarship to a junior or senior college student who has graduated from one of the schools of Hardin County.
Scholarship applications are available by emailing the Club’s Scholarship Chair, Jill Simmons at [email protected]. The scholarship application deadline is Feb. 1, 2019.
University Club II has awarded scholarships since 1964 with the first scholarship in the amount of $100. Since 1964 the Club has awarded over $35,000 in scholarships to college students to further their education.
Lee O. Carpenter, age 98, passed away on Tuesday, December 25, 2018 at 10:09 a.m. at Lima Memorial Health System.
He was born on February 15, 1920 in Deerfield, Missouri to the late Albert and Rachel (Winders) Carpenter. On June 3, 1942 Lee married Martha Jane Spiegel and she preceded him in death on November 26, 2008 after 66 years of marriage.
