Northern scores 95 but still loses

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS — Seniors Nate Burger (Dayton/Alter) and Joey DiOrio(Columbus/Watterson) each had career-days for the Ohio Northern men's basketball team as it dropped a 101-95 decision to John Carroll in a high-scoring affair at the Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center on Saturday afternoon.

The Polar Bears fall to 5-3 overall and 3-1 in the Ohio Athletic Conference, while the Blue Streaks improve to 7-1, 3-1.

Burger poured in a career-high 34 points to lead all scorers, while DiOrio scored a career-best 25 points for ONU.

8 straight wins and counting

ONU junior Jenna Dirksen (Beavercreek/Carroll) and senior Amy Bullimore(Morrow/Little Miami) led the No. 15-ranked Ohio Northern women's basketball team to its eighth straight victory as Northern defeated John Carroll 75-37 on Saturday afternoon at the ONU Sports Center.

The Polar Bears improve to 8-1 overall and remain perfect in the Ohio Athletic Conference at 4-0, while the Blue Streaks drop to 2-6, 0-4.

Randy Cox retires from Vancrest

After 37 years working in retirement communities

Vancrest Administrator Randy Cox will retire at the end of the year to enjoy life with his family and do more traveling and golfing. He might be considered young to retire (58) and looks even younger, but has been in the nursing home business for 37 years.

Randy spent a year deciding on staff and purchasing furniture and equipment for the nursing home in Ada prior to its opening.

Deb Curlis retires from Community Health Professionals

Deb Curlis may trek through waist-deep snow in northern Michigan woods this winter or next after she retires from Community Health Professionals at the end of the month. But before she walks the deep snows at the Curlis cabin up north, she'll first be sure that the bears are hibernating.

Deb has been active in the Ada community for the past 6 years as marketing director and fundraiser coordinator for CHP, serving as Chamber of Commerce president for four years, as a member of the Buy Ada First committee, and as a Rotary Club member.

Women's track and field picked to win OAC

The Ohio Northern women's indoor track and field team has been picked finish first in the Ohio Athletic Conference standings in a poll voted on by the leagues 10 head coaches, released Friday morning.

The Polar Bears received 77 votes in the poll, including six of the 10 first place votes.

Mount Union finished second in the poll with 73 points and the four remaining first place votes, while Otterbein rounded out the top-3 with 67 points.

The Polar Bears were narrowly edged by the Purple Raiders at the indoor OAC Championships a season ago.

Men's track and field highly rated

The Ohio Northern men's indoor track and field team has been picked to finish second in the Ohio Athletic Conference in the annual preseason poll voted on by the leagues 10 head coaches, released on Friday morning.

The Polar Bears were dubbed the runners up after receiving 72 points in the poll and two first place votes.

Mount Union was picked to finish first with 77 points and the final eight remaining first place votes, while John Carroll was selected to finish third in the poll with 66 points.

Cattle wrestling in Ada

Remember the roaming rooster of Ada. Today's animal at large was a calf. This is a screen shot from the Ada Police Department Facebook.

It appeared to be a young cow, probably less than 6 months old on the way to an auction. It ran across Main by Quest Financial and First United Methodist Church, into a backyard on Highland where it was cornered.

The trailer owner placed a rope around the cow's neck and led it back into the trailer.

Mustangs defeat Ada girls

HARROD - Host Allen East built a 15-point halftime lead and cruised to a 63-35 win over local rival Ada in a Northwest Conference girls basketball battle Thursday evening.

 

The purple and gold fell to 1-4 overall and 0-2 in the NWC with the defeat, while the Lady Mustangs improved to 2-3 and 1-1 in league play after the win.

 

Ada trailed 13-7 after one period, and AE stretched the lead to 31-16 at intermission. The Mustangs extended the margin to 41-24 after three periods and finished strong with a 22-point fourth quarter to win going away.

Williams wins football honor

ONU sophomore Christiaan Williams (Sidney/Anna) has been named an Associated Press Second Team Little All-American in Div. III Football for his efforts during the 2017 season.

The 2017 Associated Press Little All-America Division III football team, was brought back this year in a partnership between the College Sports Information Directors of America and the Associated Press.

Williams is the first Polar Bear since Wes Hostetler in 2005 to be named to a Little All-America team and became the ninth football player in school history to earn the honor.

A plea from the dog shelter

Found in the outside kennel on Dec14. If this is your dog, please contact the shelter at 419-674-2209.

If you put a dog in the outside kennel after hours, please call the Kenton Police or Sheriff's Department so that they can notify the dog warden to go out and put the dog inside. With this cold weather, we hate see dogs left in the outside kennel overnight.
