Red Kettle drive looks for bellringers.

Want to be a bellringer for the Salvation Army Red Kettle drive this holiday season?
If so, contact Kathy Reese at 419-889-1845.

The local Salvation Unit will be at Reichert's Clothing on Dec. 2 and 9 and at Community Market on Dec. 16 and 23 from 10 a.m. until 7 p.m. those Saturdays.
More ringers are needed to fill the schedule. And donors are sought to fill the red kettles with money on those Saturdays at the two locations.

ONU receives $36,000 grant

A $36,000 Ohio Means Internships and Co-ops (OMIC) award from the Ohio Department of Higher Education supports ONU business and engineering students by covering costs related to the experiential activities allowing for more student participation.

This is the third time ONU has participated in the OMIC program. Matthew Lambdin, director of experiential leaning in the business college; Laurie Laird, director of corporate and alumni relations in the engineering college; and Dean Kales, KEEN industry liaison in the engineering college, are the ONU project directors on this award.

ONU grad confirmed by Senate to BVA

Cheryl “Cheri” L. Mason, a 1986 political science graduate at ONU, has been confirmed by the U.S. Senate as chair of the Board of Veterans’ Appeals (BVA) within the Department of Veterans Affairs. 

The appointment is a six-year term. She is the first woman and the first military spouse to serve as the chair of the BVA. 

At Northern, she served an LBJ intern for U.S. Rep. Bob McEwen of Ohio. She earned the Juris Doctor degree from Creighton University, Omaha, Neb.

Church gives grant to ONU

The West Ohio Conference of the United Methodist Church has awarded a $10,069 Undergraduate Collegiate Ministry Grant to support the Merge program and two new initiatives in Religious Life ministries on campus.

The new initiatives involve Worship Arts activities and the addition of a student staff member to oversee this work. The Rev. Dr. David MacDonald, university chaplain, is the project director for this grant.

Blood Donation Sites

The American Red Cross will collect blood donations at these two locations in Hardin County before the end of November:

Monday, Nov. 27, Noon-6 pm, First Baptist Church, Kenton, 11543 CR 175.

Tuesday, Nov. 28, 8:30 am-2:30 pm, Hardin Northern High School, 11589 SR 81, Dola.

Five taken to Lima Memorial Hospital

Accident at SR 235 and 81 on Tuesday

Five people were taken to Lima Memorial Hospital following a two-vehicle crash at the intersection of SR 235 and SR 81 at 6:35 p.m. on Tuesday. None of the injuries were life threatening.

A red SUV driven by Lisa Karn, 55, of Findlay collided with a black pickup driven by Daniel Nash, 16, of rural Ada. Karn was cited for running a red light.

Transported to Lima Memorial Hospital by Ada EMS were Karn and four of her passengers, Madison Melton, 11, Alexis Amsler, 10, Alexavier Amsler, 7, and McKayla Butler, 9, all of Findlay.

Woods in all-state VB match

Ada senior Melina Woods rises up for a kill at the Ohio Div. IV All-State volleyball match at Wooster recently.

The 6-0 southpaw made All-Ohio honors for the third consecutive season this fall, slamming over 600 kills. She led Ada to its first-ever regional berth and a third straight NWC title this fall. Woods will attend Div. I Canisius College in Buffalo on a scholarship.

What do you do with 8 turkeys, 3 hams, and 20 homemade pies?

You serve them to 233 people who come for Thanksgiving dinner. ReStore Community Center hosted 65 more people than a year ago when it held its annual Thanksgiving feast on Tuesday evening.

The free meal not only feeds people, but also provides an opportunity to socialize with friends and neighbors at Thanksgiving time.  All of the trimmings were there: cranberry sauce, dressing, sweet potatoes, mashed potatoes and gravy, green beans and corn, dinner rolls, salad.

Volleyball ranked 19th

ADA — The Ohio Northern volleyball team finished the 2017 season ranked No. 19 in the season-ending American Volleyball Coaches Association poll.

The Polar Bears were 29-6 overall, 8-1 Ohio Athletic Conference.

Ohio Northern won twice in the NCAA III Tournament Regionals before falling to eventual national runner-up Wittenberg in the Regional finals to end its season.
