Sunday opera workshop in Presser Hall

The Ohio Northern University Opera Workshop will present an evening of opera scenes and arias at 7 p.m. on  Sunday, Oct. 23, in the Presser Hall Snyder Recital Hall. 

The scenes and arias will be staged and costumed. Micah Graber, adjunct voice faculty member, will be directing the performance and Chris Gray will be the accompanist.  

Mozart, Bernstein, Nicolai, Puccini and Floyd are some of the composers who will be represented. The evening’s entertainment is free and open to the public.

ONU men's soccer team selling pink ONU soccer shirts

Breast cancer awareness on Oct. 22

During the ONU men’s soccer game on Saturday, Oct. 22, at 7 p.m. vs. Muskingum, the ONU team will be sell pink ONU soccer shirts.

The players will wear the shirts during pregame. Shirt prices are $20 for students and $25 for adults.

The team is accepting donations all week  as well as before the game and at halftime.

All proceeds from shirt sales and from donations will go to the Breast Cancer
Research Foundation in the name of Alex Paulino, wife of ONU Assistant Coach,
Cayleb Paulino who was diagnosed with breast cancer this summer.

Ada HS quiz bowl team 2nd in 16-school competition

The Ada High School quiz bowl team finished second out of 16 teams at the WTLW-TV Quiz Whiz held this week at WTLW in Lima.  

On Tuesday, the upper bracket field was reduced from eight teams to two.  In the opener, Ada scored an opening round win over Bath by one question. In the second round, the Bulldogs bested Celina to advance to the semifinals.

In the second night of competition, Ada defeated Versailles to advance to the final match, facing St. Mary’s High School.   St. Mary’s had advanced to the finals by winning both of their matches in the Wednesday lower bracket matches.  The lower bracket was also a field of eight.  

Trick-or-treat at Vancrest of Ada on Oct. 27

Vancrest of Ada hopes that youngsters will add their new facility on their Halloween route on Thursday, Oct. 27.  Trick or treat time there is from 5:30 until 7:30 p.m.

"Our residents are very excited to enjoy the costumes and give the kids loads of candy," said Randy Cox, administrator.

Vancrest, which opened this year, is located at 600 W. North Ave. across from the Ada Schools.

Vendors invited to display at Vancrest of Ada holiday craft fair

Event is Dec.10; deadline to sign-up Nov. 21

Vancrest of Ada is looking for vendors for a Holiday Craft Fair to be held there from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 10.

Table rental is $30, if you provide your own table; $35, if you use one of their tables; $5 extra for electric.

To reserve a table, call Jennifer Line, activities director, at 419-558-1379. Reservations accepted until Nov. 21.

The $6 million Vancrest facility, located across from Ada Schools, opened in May.

United Way reaches 20% of goal

The United Way is at 20% of its goal, or $40,289 of its $220,000 goal for 2017.  

Totals for the divisions follow: Agriculture - $4,730, Special Gifts - $9,488, FIRE (Finance, Insurance & Real Estate)- $7,725, Education - $1,823, Government - $3,175, Professional - $3,318, Industry - $3,187, Retail - $567, Out of County - $231 and Special Events $5,784.

 

A “YES" vote on library levy signals Ada's strong commitment to the future

I moved to Ada approximately 3 years ago along with my husband, who found a faculty position at Ohio Northern University (ONU).  One of the many concerns I had moving to Ada was whether my then  6 year old son could find adequate resources for intellectual stimulation.

Bulldogs advance to district semi-finals against Leipsic next Tuesday

DOLA - The Ada volleyball team won a tough four-set battle at county rival Hardin Northern in Div. IV second round tournament action Thursday night.

The visiting Ada squad rallied to win a close third set for a 2-1 lead, then carried that momentum to a 10-point lead in set four and held off a late Polar Bear charge to advance.

After their ninth consecutive triumph, the purple and gold Lady Bulldogs improve to 18-6 overall. HN finished its season 17-6 as they lost for the fourth time in five matches down the stretch.

Ada's Melina Woods NWC volleyball player of the year - second time!

NWC honors also to Madisyn Gossard, Olivia Alexander and Haley Wyss

For the second consecutive season, Ada High School junior Melina Woods was named  Northwest Conference “Player of The Year” in volleyball.

Ada won the Northwest Conference title with a perfect 8-0 record in league play.

JaNahn Evans of Lincolnview was voted NWC Coach of the Year. Voting took place earlier this week by NWC coaches.

Other Ada players named to the all-conference team follow:
• Madisyn Gossard, junior, first team
• Olivia Alexander, junior, second team
• Haley Wyss, senior, honorable mention

Ada band continues its winning streak

Now just a few points shy of qualifying for state marching band finals

The Ada High School Marching Band continues winning streak.

The Ada High School marching band earned first place in class C Saturday, Oct. 15, at the Buckeye Invitational.

This was the third competition of the season and the third time the Bulldogs have earned first place.

In addition, the group earned honors for best general effects, color guard, music and visual effects in Class C.

The Buckeye Invitational is a high school band competition sponsored by the Ohio Music Education Association (OMEA). It is hosted by The Ohio State University Marching Band and takes place in Ohio Stadium.
