Weather halts cross country race

By Cort Reynolds

SPENCERVILLE - Rain and lightning interrupted the Ada cross country team at the Spencerville Invitational Saturday morning.

The boys race, started in pouring rain, was cancelled about a third of the way into the 3.1-mile run by lightning. The boys had to sprint back to the finish line because lightning caused an early end to the race.

"They had fun running in the torrential rain; it made for an interesting meet," said first-year head coach Josh Klein.

It's a new era for the Heterick Library

Story and photos by Monty Siekerman
Many changes greet visitors to Heterick Library, especially the first floor which now has colorful seating in many configurations---open seating for individuals or groups, cubicles for small groups, and, yes, there still is a circulation desk.

Libraries have renovated to meet the modern times. No longer are there stack and stacks of books facing you when you enter the building since so much information can be accessed digitally.

Two questions: Where is this in Ada, and what does it say?

By Monty Siekerman
Know what this says and where it's located?

Hint: above a door where you pay bills.

The Latin phrase is ONU's motto: Strength through Diversity.

The university is known for its academic diversity, having offered classes in arts and science, engineering, pharmacy, law, and business for more than a century.

Answer: This wording is above the front door as you exit Lehr Memorial.

Football: Polar Bears lose a shocker in New York

By Tim Glon

No. 18-ranked Ohio Northern opened its 2016 season with a tough 34-30 loss at Utica (N.Y.) on Saturday afternoon at Gaetano Stadium.

The Polar Bears (0-1 overall) were in control for most of the afternoon and led 30-13 with seven minutes left in the game.

But the Pioneers (2-0) scored 21 points in the final 6:35, including an 8-yard TD pass with 15 seconds to play, to post the improbable win.

Northern had one final chance as sophomore Will Freed completed a 35-yard pass to junior Chad Rex to put the ball at the 25-yard line with three seconds left.

Meet Mark Bricker - who covers a lot of ground in Ada

By Monty Siekerman
Mark Bricker, who installed the Heritage Gardens at the governor's mansion in Bexley, is the new grounds manager at ONU.

After receiving his bachelor of science degree in landscape horticulture, he became nursery manager for the City of Columbus where he supervised the annual planting of 3,000 trees throughout the city streets.

He then installed the Heritage Gardens, which consist of native Ohio plants. From there he became grounds manager for a private estate in Dayton.

He is now the ONU/Sodexo grounds manager, responsible for the planting and care of trees and flowers, the grass, and snow removal on the 360-acre campus.
