Girls' tennis team whitewashes Lima Senior

LIMA - Visiting Ada whitewashed Lima Senior 5-0 in girls tennis action Monday evening.

The Lady Bulldogs improved to 2-1 as they recorded their second straight road win. Ada won all five matches in straight sets.

Meredith Marshall improved to 4-2 at singles with a near double bagel win. Shelby Higgins also dropped just one game to win at third singles. Libbie Milks lost just two games in her convincing victory at second singles.

ONU women picked to win OAC soccer title

The Ohio Northern women's soccer team was picked to finish first in the Ohio Athletic Conference in 2016 in the OAC preseason coaches poll.

Northern finished 12-7-2 overall and 7-2-0 a year ago under 13th-year head coach Mark Batman. 

The Polar Bears finished with 51 points and six first place votes, while Capital finished second with 46 points and three first place votes, and Otterbein finished third with 42 points.

Only the top six vote-getters were mentioned in the poll.

Northern will open its 2016 campaign Sept. 1 at 5pm as it travels to Kenyon, before returning home Sept. 3 for a three-game home stint at Kerscher Stadium.

ONU men picked to win OAC soccer title

The Ohio Northern men's soccer team has been selected to win the 2016 Ohio Athletic Conference Regular Season title in the 2016 OAC coaches poll.

The Polar Bears finished the 2015 season 17-5-1 overall and 8-1-0 in the OAC under 19th-year head coach Brent Ridenour.

ONU won the OAC regular season title and defeated John Carroll in double overtime of the OAC Tournament championship game to claim the OAC Tournament championship in 2015.

Northern topped the poll with 51 points and six first place votes, while John Carroll finished second with 47 points and four first place votes, and Capital rounded out the top three with 40 points.

Country-style breakfast in Alger Sept. 2

The Alger Memorial Festival Committee will hold a country-style breakfast from 7 to 11 a.m., Saturday,  Sept. 2, at the Alger Social Center, 210 N. Main St., Alger.

The menu includes biscuits, sausage gravy, hash browns, scrambled eggs, fried apples, sausage patties and a beverage.

A suggested donation is $7. The breakfast is all-you-can-eat (premises only). Carry out is available. Call 419-679-8460 for free local delivery.

Extra dinners available while they last at Boosters Aug. 26 barbecue

There will be extra dinners available for the Ada Music Boosters annual barbecue on Friday, Aug. 26, before Ada’s first home football game with USV.  

To ensure you get a dinner, tickets can be pre-ordered through the Music Booster web page at www.AdaMusicBoosters.org

Dinners will be available at the Ada Park on Friday from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m.; simply drive up in your car to be served.

The Ada Music Boosters chicken barbecue features a complete dinner for $8 each.

ONU Pharmacy Associate Dean completes leadership program

Dr. Kelly Shields, associate dean at the Ohio Northern University Raabe College of Pharmacy, recently completed the American Association Colleges of Pharmacy (AACP) Academic Leadership Fellows Program (ALFP). The year-long fellowship began in July 2015, and finished with a commencement ceremony on July 23, 2016, at the AACP Annual Meeting in Anaheim Calif.

Here are the winners in the Kiwanis Club pedal tractor pull

Here are winners of the Ada Kiwanis Club pedal tractor pull held Aug. 13 at the Ada Farmers and Merchants Picnic.

There were three classes, with a total of 36 competitors.

The results are as follows:

Ada Depot garden tour

A little drizzle doesn't stop gardeners from gardening or learning more about plants.

During a light shower last week the members of the Kenton Garden Club toured the Ada Depot gardens. Gardener Monty Siekerman explained how the downtown garden originated and told about some of the plants.

There are more than 100 varieties of annuals and perennials. Some of his new favorites this year include banana tree and pentas.
