Medication Disposal Day in Ada April 23

By Monty Siekerman
A Medication Disposal Day will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 23, in the parking lot between Rite Aid and Northern on Main.

Those who want to dispose of expired or unused prescriptions as well as over-the-counter medications may give them to law enforcement officers at that time.

The meds will be disposed of in a safe, legal, and environmentally conscious way.
Here's a photo of last year's volunteers during which time 32 people disposed of unwanted meds.

For Icon readers living closer to Kenton, the event will be held at the hospital there at the same time.

Cindy Boehm message to students: "Don't ever give up"

Compiled by Darlene Bowers
Welcome to the Ada Icon’s “Ada Teacher Feature.” Here we share thoughts and insights from local teachers who lift up and inspire our students. Let us lift up and inspire these educators as well. Today we meet Cindy Boehm, second grade teacher, whose advice is “don’t ever give up.”  Cindy’s 29 years in the profession is a testament to that stamina, her spiritual foundation, and her joy in working with children.

It’s the club’s annual mulch sale. While the sale starts May 7, club members are taking orders now.

All proceeds go to the club’s scholarship fund. Since 2000 the club has awarded $61,000 in scholarship money as a result of the sale, according to Chad Hays of the club.

Here’s the details:

Mulch cost:
• Brown mulch: $30 per Bobcat scoop

• Black mulch: $35 per Bobcat scoop

On Feb. 16, 1960 automated crossing gates were in operation at all three Ada rail crossings. The cost of the gates was $75,000.

On Wednesday Feb. 17, 1960, the watchman’s tower, which stood at Main Street for half a century was removed.

Old-timers recalled Vance Botkin as a watchman and more recently Ernest Nixon and James Curtis.

ONU student receives 2016 Adroit Prize in Poetry

Ohio Northern University student Rachel Cruea, a junior creative writing major from Findlay, Ohio, has received the 2016 Adroit Prize in Poetry, an international poetry prize for undergraduates and high school students presented by The Adroit Journal.

Cruea’s poem, “The Yellow Marrow Doesn’t Matter,” was selected by judge Corey Van Landingham from thousands of entries from around the world. “This gorgeous, unswerving poem holds great power in its address to an ill sibling,” Van Landingham wrote. “Never florid, never easily sentimental, this poet knows: Illness is not grand.”
