This weekend at the library: used book sale, stuffed animal sleepover and scavenger hunt

It's happening at the Ada Public Library this weekend: used book sale, stuffed animal sleepover and an Ada scavenger hunt.

Amanda Bennett, library director, says to stop by the library Friday and Saturday for a used book sale. Prices follow:

Paperbacks 25 cents
Hardcovers 50 cents
Bag of books for a buck!
All proceeds benefit the Library

"Friday is our Stuffed Animal Sleepover. Drop your child's stuffed animal by 4:30 p.m. on Friday for a special stuffed-animals-only storytime and sleepover with Ms. Natalie and Ms. Manda. Stuffed animals can be picked up again on Saturday between 10 a.m.-2 p.m.," said Bennett.

Kiwanis Club says "Get ready for the Oct. 28 Ada Halloween parade

It’s October – get out your Halloween outfit.

This year’s Ada Kiwanis Club Halloween parade is Monday, Oct. 28. Participants should meet behind the Ada Municipal Building on Buckeye Street.

Registration is at 5:30 p.m. and the parade starts at 6 p.m.

Several costume categories are in the judging competition:
• Prettiest
• Scariest
• Most original

Custume judging by age groups follow:
• Pre-school and kindergarten
• 1st and 2nd grades
• 3rd and 4th grades
• 5th and 6th grades
• Groups any age and pets
• Adults (most original only)
• Ada HS band

The Icon's Facebook page has 276 followers and this list continues to grow weekly.
During the week of Sept. 24-30 the Icon Facebook page:
• Reached 1,605 persons
• Had 50 persons talking about it
• Added 9 new likes

Samuel Risner was retired from Erie Railroad

Samuel Risner, age 89 died Tuesday, October 1, 2013 at 3:55 p.m. at Lima Memorial Health System, Lima.

He was born on March 24, 1924 in Gullet, KY to Jack and Delli (Montgomery) Risner who preceded him in death. On June 27, 1944 he married Arlene Botkin and she died on December 16, 1992.

Samuel worked for 29 years for the Erie Railroad. He was a member of the Quickstep Pentecostal Church of God, Alger.

Richland Manor fall festival Oct. 17

Richland Manor, 7400 Swaney Road, Bluffton, invites Icon viewers to its fall festival. The event begins at 6:30 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 17. 

The free fesitval includes carmel apples and other fall favorites, live muic and hay rides. It is  open to the public.

September weather pretty normal, pretty fall

The autumnal equinox has passed and the shift has begun.  The month of September looked a lot like summer-into-fall would look.  Guy Verhoff, area weather observer, provided the Icon the following information on September's weather:

The highest daytime temperature was a scorching 97 degrees on Tuesday, September 10.  September 10 was also the day of the highest night time temperature of 74 degrees.

The lowest daytime temperature in September was a mild 64 degrees on Monday, September 23.  The lowest nighttime temp was a chilling 39 degrees on Saturday, September 14.

For those keeping track, the month saw a overall temperature swing of 58 degrees. 

Rep. Clyde speaker at Hardin Democrat fall luncheon

The keynote speaker for the Hardin County Democrats Fall Campaign Luncheon will be State Representative Kathleen Clyde.  Rep. Clyde is in her second term in the Ohio House of Representatives and represents the 75th Ohio House District.

Introducing the 2013 Ada High School homecoming court

It’s Ada High School homecoming week. The high school homecoming court was announced on Monday. One senior will be homecoming queen and one will be homecoming king. The queen and king will be announced in a pre-game ceremony on the football field on Friday.

Jessica Rojas Gutierrez is the daughter of Miguel Rojas and Socorro Gutierrez. She is captain of the soccer team, member of Language Club, National Honor Society and Fellowship of Christian Athletes. She is also treasurer of FCA and treasurer of the senior class.

Agnes Crates blows out 100 candles!

Three hundred people were on hand Sunday afternoon to wish Agnes Crates a happy 100th birthday at a celebration at the Ada VFW. 

Relatives and guests came from far and wide to congratulate one of their favorite persons on her long and wonderful life as well as give and receive a hug and kiss from the honored guest.

Agnes was born on Sept. 23, 1913 in Forest, Ohio.  She married Ralph Crates when she was almost 17 and they moved to his home in Ada.  While Ralph died in 1948, Agnes continues to live in the same home 83 years later.
