Application for 2012 Harvest and Herb Fest' queen on The Icon

Young women interested in being the 2012 Ada Area Chamber of Commerce Harvest and Herb Festival Queen may print the application form from The Icon. It is an attachment at the bottom of this story.

The application ask three questions:

1 - If you were to support a special cause or offer to volunteer for a special organization, which would it be and why?

2 - Describe three characteristics that made you who and what you are today.

3 - What would it mean to you personally and for the Ada community to represent the 2012 Harvest and Herb Festival as Queen?

ONU featured in The Princeton Review’s ‘The Best 377 Colleges: 2013 Edition’

Ohio Northern University is once again featured as one of the nation’s top schools in The Princeton Review’s annual college guide, “The Best 377 Colleges: 2013 Edition.” ONU also is one of the 153 institutions that The Princeton Review recommends in the “Best of the Midwest” section of its website feature, “2013 Best Colleges by Region.”

...and on Thursday night you can meet the team

The Ada High School cheerleaders invite Bulldog fans to join the cheerleaders at the “Meet the Team” community pep rally on Thursday, Aug. 23 at 7 p.m.at the Ada War Memorial Stadium.

The cheerleaders remind fans: Don’t forget to order your Bulldog Nation spirit wear! Order from any high school cheerleader or get an order form in the high school office.

Ada HS students may register  for the Bulldog Nation Superfan 5K on Sunday, Sept. 19, at 5 p.m.. Forms available in the Ada High School office.

What you doin' Friday evening?

High school football and all the trimmings return to Ada Friday. Pre-sale tickets are now available as are tickets for a chicken barbecue dinner. Here are the details:

Ada students can save $2 by purchasing a ticket in advance for Friday's football season opener.

There are presale tickets available in the Ada High School office for Friday’s home varsity football game vs Hardin Northern. The game starts at 7:30 p.m. Adult tickets are $6 and student tickets are $4. All tickets at the game will be $6.

Apollo school board meets Aug. 27 - agenda provided

The Apollo Career Center school board will meet on Monday, Aug. 27, at  7 p.m. at the school. Several back-to-school issues are on the agenda. For a copy of the agenda, open the printer-friendly attachment at the bottom of this story.

BVH Rehab and Sports Medicine offering sports injury clinicsBVH Rehab and Sports Medicine offering sports injury clinics

Blanchard Valley Rehab and Sports Medicine will offer a sports injury clinic for area athletes every Saturday from August 25 through October 27 from 8 to 9 a.m. at the BVH Rehab & Sports Medicine Center, 1721 Medical Boulevard, Suite B, Findlay.

Athletes will receive an evaluation by BVH sports medicine physician Dr. Michael Stump. Dr. Stump is sports medicine certified and the only area physician trained in computerized concussion testing.

Athletes under 18 years of age must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. No appointment is needed. For more information, call 419.425.3199.

Fight the bite protect yourself against mosquito-borne illness

Officials from the Allen County Health Department are encouraging residents to take precautions and protect themselves against mosquito-borne illness.  

The Ohio Department of Health has reported an increase in the number of mosquito pools that have tested positive for West Nile virus in the state.  In addition, reports of West Nile Disease in humans are increasing. 

Three other diseases including La Crosse encephalitis, St. Louis encephalitis and Eastern equine encephalitis can also be transmitted through the bite of a mosquito.

Marie "Mickey" Ream funeral service at Riley Creek Baptist

Marie “Mickey” Ream, 99, died Aug. 20, 2012.  She was born in Allen County (Jackson Twp.) Ohioon July 11, 1913, to Dow and Ettie (Hinkle) Scoles. She has resided in the Grand Haven,Mich., area the past 11 years.  She was a homemaker most of her life.  She also worked many years as a bookkeeper and data entry person at a lumber company. 

On July 27, 1934, she married Stanley F. Ream who preceded her six years ago. Mrs. Ream was a member of Cavalry Bible Church.

She is survived by her children, Gene (Pauline) Ream of Waterloo, Iowa, Pat (David) De Buhr of Blain, Minn., Gary (Susan) Ream of Spring Lake, Mich.; 8 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren.

Kevin Byrne, head basketball coach at Ohio Northern University was welcomed as a guest. The birthday of Sandy Neely (August 15th) was noted. The membership anniversary Myrna McCurdy (August 13, 2007) was noted. The wedding anniversary of Mark Light (August 18, 1993) was also noted.

Ada boys' fall 2-0 against Miller City

Here's Caleb Garmon (1) in soccer action between Ada and Miller City on Aug. 20. The Wildcats won 2-0. Ada returns to action on Wednesday in the battle of Hardin County as they take travel to Kenton.
