Kevin Byrne, head basketball coach at Ohio Northern University was welcomed as a guest. The birthday of Sandy Neely (August 15th) was noted. The membership anniversary Myrna McCurdy (August 13, 2007) was noted. The wedding anniversary of Mark Light (August 18, 1993) was also noted.
In business:
-Members heard an updated financial report.
-Secretary Brian Myers reported that photos from the Farmers and Merchants Picnic Pedal Pull are posted on the Ada Icon along with a story and link to more photos.
-Joe Ferguson reported that the club hosted a Pedal Tractor Pull at the Ada F & M picnic. 64 Children participated and the results are follows:
Class 1 (Ages 3 and 4)1st place Drake Lang from Celina; 2nd place in the middle is Gavin Oldfield from Ada; and 3rd is Carson Reese from Ada.
Class 2 (Ages 5 and 6) 1st place, Lane Wildermuth, Harrod; 2nd place, Colton Long, Ada; and 3rd place, Drew Long, Ada. Class 3 (Ages 7 and 8): 1st place, Troy Wildermuth from Harrod; 2nd place, Brady Shea, Lima; and 3rd place, Sami Klingler, Lima.
The following Kiwanians participated: Joe Ferguson, Harold Freisner, Sandy Neely, Marilyn Green, Sharon MacKenzie, Mike Hood, Bryan Marshall, Scott Allison, John Berg, Charles Van Dyne and Tom Kier.
-Myrna McCurdy, Jon Umphress and Bob McCurdy reported on the Ohio District Kiwanis annual Convention held last weekend in Boardman, Ohio.
Myrna commented that she got some ideas on membership recruitment. Husband Bob attended the meeting on the 1st Ladies Project on the neonatal tetanus project. The 2013-14 Governor will be from Findlay. The international convention next year will be in Vancouver.
-The Harvest and Herb Festival is set for Saturday, September 15th. We have a spot reserved
-Joe Ferguson asked the allocations committee to consider supporting the 4H program again.
-Kiwanis Education Minute: Kiwanis dues cannot be claimed as a personal tax deduction. As nonprofit corporations, Kiwanis clubs do not pay taxes on income. But Kiwanis clubs do not qualify as deductible charities for members or donors who provide the club’s income. This is why some clubs, districts, and Kiwanis International have established charitable foundations to receive tax-deductible donations for service purposes.

Bob McCurdy introduced: Kevin Byrne who is has been named as the head men's basketball coach at Ohio Northern University.
Byrne comes to Ohio Northern after a 4-year stint at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he served as their associate head coach, and brings 13 years of coaching experience and three years of experience playing professional basketball to the Polar Bears.
The Akron, Ohio, native also has coaching stints at Marietta and Carnegie Mellon (Pa.) and played professional basketball for three seasons in Europe.
Last season, Byrne helped guide MIT to a 29-2 record and trip to the NCAA Division III Tournament Final Four.
Byrne earned a B.A. in Psychology from Carnegie Mellon in 1996 and an M.A. in Psychology from Duquesne. The Polar Bear men's basketball team finished 14-14 overall in 2011-12 and was sixth in the Ohio Athletic Conference with an 8-10 record. Coach Byrne discussed some of the highlights of his career and his general philosophy for developing student athletes and building the program to its potential and return as a national competitor at the Division 3 level.
President Harold Friesner then adjourned the meeting at 1:03 p.m.
