PORTAGE, Ind. - The Ada High School girls swim team finished a strong sixth out of 18 teams behind three first-place finishes at the Jay County Invitational in Portage, Indiana on Saturday, January 7.
The Ada boys came in 14th. Oak Hill won both the boys and girls team titles.
Ada sophomore Lily Baumgartner shattered a 32-year old school record in winning the 500 freestyle. She broke Tanya Nelson’s 1991 Ada mark of 5:37.17 by 10.08 seconds in a time of 5:27.09.
The Ada High School boys basketball team hosted traditional arch-rival Upper Scioto Valley in their annual grudge match Saturday night, January 7, with the Rams pulling out a hard-fought victory late, 54-51.
Ram junior Alex Sanders scored seven straight points in the fourth quarter with USV clinging to a 43-42 lead to spark an 11-6 run that decided the outcome.
The 6-2 Sanders scored a game-high 22 points and also grabbed a team-best nine rebounds.
Ada fell to 5-6 after the tough non-league loss. Meanwhile, USV improved to 7-3 with the close-shave win.
The Ada boys basketball team harbored an upset bid into the fourth period at backyard rival Allen East before a huge Mustang closing run carried the hosts to a 69-55 Northwest Conference victory Friday night at Harrod.
Ada fell to 5-5 overall and 0-3 in the NWC with their second loss to the Mustangs in eight days. Meanwhile, AE improved to 6-3 overall and 1-1 in the NWC with the win.
"We were still only down four with six minutes left, and it got away from us," said second-year Ada head coach Vince Halliday. "We still turn it over too much and can't get stops or defensive rebounds when needed."
The visiting Allen East team put in a big second half, outpacing the Ada High School girls basketball team 66-28 in a hard-fought Northwest Conference contest Thursday night, January 5.
It was the second meeting between the two local foes in eight days. Despite the point disparity, the rematch was mostly competitive as Ada came out and played with improved intensity and tenacity.
But the deeper Mustang girls poured it on in the final 18 minutes. They took the second half 38-11 after leading by just five late in the second quarter, to win going away.
