ONU seniors Chris Garbig (Wilder, Ky./Highlands) and Emily Richards (Delaware/Hayes) were named Ohio Northern's Clyde Lamb Award winners for 2017-18.
The prestigious Clyde A. Lamb Scholar-Athlete Award is the highest honor given in the Ohio Athletic Conference each year and are presented annually to a single male and a single female from each of the league's 10 institutions.
Criteria for the award include at least two years participation in an OAC sponsored sport, senior status, a minimum grade point average of 3.00 and sportsmanlike conduct in a manner that has brought credit to the student-athlete and his or her institution.
Garbig, a midfielder on the ONU men's soccer team majoring in accounting, was a Academic All-American as a senior this fall and was a United Soccer Coaches Association Scholar All-America as a junior in 2016.
He was also a three-time Academic All-OAC honoree and was named First Team All-Conference twice.
On campus, Garbig is also involved in International Honorary Member Beta Alpha Psi, James F. Dicke College of Business Administration Dean's Advisory Council and is a Chief Financial Officer of Polar Merchandise.
This season, Garbig had two goals, two assists and six points while starting all 20 matches.
He was a four-year starter and finished his 83-match career with nine goals, 13 assists and 31 points.
Richards is a world-class middle distance runner and is majoring in chemistry.
She is a 7-time NCAA Division III Champion, an 11-time All-American and an Academic All-American on the ONU cross country and track and field teams.
Richards is a four-time NCAA Champion in the 800-meter run, has won the mile indoors twice and the 2017 outdoor title in the 1,500.
She also earned All-America honors in cross country by finishing ninth at this season's NCAA III Cross Country Championships, which is a 6,000-meter race.
Richards has won 24 OAC titles, was named the OAC Distance Runner of the Year five times and the OAC Springer of the Year once. She is also a two-time All-Conference honoree in the javelin.
Last summer, she finished eighth in the 800 in a field of 32 professionals and NCAA Division I athletes at the United States Track and Field Championships in Sacramento, Calif.
On campus, she is involved in the Northern Review school newspaper, the Society for Collegiate Journalists and as an Undergrad
Researcher in Environmental Chemistry.
Richards will compete for two more NCAA titles at the 2018 NCAA III Outdoor Track and Field Championships in LaCrosse, Wis.
The award was founded in 1985 and is named in honor of Clyde A. Lamb.
Lamb organized the department of health and physical education at Ohio Northern University in 1929, and served as a coach, department chairman and athletics director at ONU from 1929-64.
He continued to teach full-time until his death in 1969.
Lamb, who received his bachelor's degree from Coe College in 1923 and a master's degree from Columbia University in 1929, coached numerous sports at Ohio Northern during his tenure.
In 1959, he was elected to the NAIA Helms Hall of Fame. He was honored as "Ada's Distinguished Citizen" in 1956 and was inducted into Ohio Northern's Athletic Hall of Fame in 1969.
