For his annual club visitation, Jeff Schulman, representing Ohio Kiwanis Division 2, noted that he is his 37th year as a Kiwanis member.

He asked members to think about a short conversation that they might have with a stranger to give an answer to “What is Kiwanis?” This conversation might include the six objects (goals) of Kiwanis membership:

To give primacy to the human and spiritual rather than to the material values of life.

To encourage the daily living of the Golden Rule in all human relationships.

To promote the adoption and the application of higher social, business, and professional standards.

To develop, by precept and example, a more intelligent, aggressive, and serviceable citizenship.

To provide, through Kiwanis clubs, a practical means to form enduring friendships, to render altruistic service, and to build better communities.

To cooperate in creating and maintaining that sound public opinion and high idealism which make possible the increase of righteousness, justice, patriotism, and goodwill.

Jeff gave some of the history of Kiwanis and detailed how the membership demographic has changed over the years to reflect changes in the American society. He described the problems of Kiwanis’s recent Kiwanis incentives that try to instill growth in clubs but ultimately do not yield growth of a younger membership base.

A younger membership base helps the club sustain its existence and broadly promote programs. He proposed that our club might provide a free year of membership to Kiwanis for our scholarship recipients.

John Berg was the 50-50.

The following information is from last week’s meeting:

Members of the Ada Kiwanis club gathered at the Ada-Liberty Township Squad House on Tuesday to present a check to the squad for the purchase of pediatric trauma bags and to present Kiwanis Care Bears, which will be given to pediatric patients being transported in the squad’s two units.

The check represented a joint effort by the Ada Kiwanis Club and the Ohio Kiwanis Foundation. It was presented by club president Heather Cox.

Hardin County squad leader Tom Miller expressed his sincere thanks to the club for their generous donation.

The Ohio District Kiwanis Foundation provides a way for Kiwanis clubs and members to support service in communities throughout Ohio. Through donations and fundraising activities, financial resources are combined and invested to make grants for Kiwanis projects that serve children.

Since 2003, a particular focus has been on Pediatric Trauma Prevention and Education projects.

Projects in which Kiwanis family clubs are involved are eligible for grants to begin or expand service in local communities. Community grants support programs enriching the lives of children. Pediatric trauma grants support projects which prevent or treat children’s injuries.

More information on all these programs and the Foundation’s organization can be found at [email protected]

The Ada Kiwanis Club was chartered in February, 1924. Meetings are held weekly at noon at McIntosh Center, ONU.

Guests are always welcome.
