The rainstorms we experienced earlier this week left us all with a little education in the importance of storm sewer systems.
Overall, the Village’s storm sewer system performed quite well during the storms, especially given the amount of rain that came down in a short amount of time.
Some areas of our community received 3-4 inches of water in just a matter of minutes, which is far from the normal rainfall we would expect. While some of our streets had water, the storm sewer system was clear enough to allow that water to recede rather quickly.
Each of us can work to keep our storm sewers clear so when rain comes, the water is able to enter the system quickly.
Items such as trash, leaves and grass clippings can get caught in the catch basins and storm sewer system if left in the street.
Village crews clear catch basins, especially before and after storms come through Ada, and as they say, prevention is the best medicine. By keeping the streets clear of grass clippings, trash and other debris, we are also keeping our storm sewer systems in conditions to do what they are designed to do – move storm water as efficiently as possible.
As a property owner, you can also help the efficiency of the Village’s storm sewer system by taking a few steps. By tieing your downspouts into the storm sewer system, you can ensure your storm water is moving into the system instead of into the street.
If you experience water in your basement, you may want to consider the use of sump pumps to help with an influx of water during heavy rains.
