Ohio Northern University’s Pettit College of Law will present the 2013 Carhart Program on Legal Ethics on Monday, Oct. 7, at 11:15 a.m. in the Celebrezze Moot Court Room.
The program will feature Madhavi Sunder’s presentation “From Goods to a Good Life: Intellectual Property Law Beyond Efficiency” and Jon Garon’s “To Promote the Progress: Incentives, Exclusives, and Values to Build a More Perfect Creative Culture.”
Sunder’s book, “ From Goods to a Good Life: Intellectual Property and Global Justice,” which was published in 2012, calls for a richer understanding of intellectual property law’s effects on social and cultural life. Sunder is a leading scholar of law and culture.
She was named a Carnegie Scholar in 2006 and has been a visiting professor of law at the Yale Law School, the University of Chicago Law School, and Cornell Law School. Her work traverses numerous legal fields, from intellectual property to human rights law and the First Amendment.
She is the Thelton E. Henderson Visiting Scholar-in-Residence at the University of California, Berkeley, School of Law for 2013.
Garon will analyze the judicial history of assumptions about incentives and contrast those with the economic and sociological analysis of these incentives to suggest a better balance of incentives for creative culture and the benefit of society.
Garon is the inaugural director of the Northern Kentucky University Chase Law + Informatics Institute, an attorney, and professor of informatics, entertainment, intellectual property and business law. He has extensive practice experience in the areas of entertainment law, data privacy and security, business planning, copyright, trademark, and software licensing.
His teaching and scholarship often focus on business innovation and the development of best business practices regarding the exploitation and effectiveness of the information and data systems in business, health care, media, entertainment, and the public sector.
The Fred L. Carhart Memorial Program in Legal Ethics was established at ONU’s College of Law in 2007 through an endowment from the estate of alumnus Dwight L. Carhart in memory of his father, Fred L. Carhart, a lifelong attorney in Marion, Ohio, until his death in 1948.
The program brings eminent scholars, jurists and lawyers to Ohio Northern to actively engage in lectures, seminars and panel discussions for the benefit of students, the college and University communities, the public, and the bench and bar.
