Ada' "buy local" group working on local awareness

Let’s promote it locally.

Although it’s waiting Ada council’s okay, the Ada Buy Local Committee hopes to hold a Music on Main event to bring people downtown Ada this summer and to bring attention to buying things locally.

The event is tentatively scheduled from 6 to 8 p.m., Friday, July 13, in the depot parking lot. Richard Gainey, station manager of WONB FM, will provide the music; Ada residents will provide their own chairs for the informal fun evening.

“Our goal is to bring people downtown to eat dinner, walk Main Street, listen to music and enjoy being able to gather with others,” said Heather Cox of Liberty National Bank, who presented the idea to Ada council earlier this month.

The Buy Local Committee, an ad hoc group representing several segments of the Ada community met for only the second time on May 23.

Committee members include Alisa Armbrecht, Health Chek; Jen Brooks, Ada Herald; Chris Burns-DiBiasio, Ohio Northern University; Heather Cox, Liberty National Bank; Deb Curlis, Community health Professionals and the Ada Area Chamber of Commerce; Richard Gainey, WONB; Jonathan Lewis, McDonald’s; Charles VanDyne, VanDyne Law Office; and Ronald Zimmerly, Liberty National Bank.

Members invite others in the community to join. The intention of the group is to promote the benefits of buy local. Among those benefits includes:
1 – Money spent here stays here
2 – Jobs and wages
3 – Strong tax base
4 – Local business owners invest in our own community
5 – Better variety of products and services
6 – Convenience equals savings – time and money
7 – Green friendly – reduces gas consumption and pollution
8 – Keeping local dollars in the economy
9 – Local character and prosperity
10 – Friends and neighbors – local businesses are staff by local residents
11 – Non-profits receive greater support
12 – Community well being

The group’s next meeting, open to all interested persons, is at 8 a.m., Friday, June 27, at the Ada McDonald’s Restaurant
