ADA — Junior Megan Lubinski (Loveland/ Brighton) and Sophomore Shelby Starkey (Bellefontaine) won four events each to lead the Ohio Northern women's swimming and diving team to a 187-87 season-opening victory over Wilmington at the ONU Sports Center Natatorium on Saturday afternoon.
The Polar Bears improve to 1-0 overall and are 1-0 in the Ohio Athletic Conference, while the Quakers fall to 0-1, 0-1.
Lubinski won the 200-yard free in 1:58.89, the 50 free in :25.09 and the 100 free in :54.99. She also combined with freshman Katie Bend (Carmel, Ind.), junior Kauren Shaw (Port Clinton) and Starkey to win the 400 free relay in 3:51.22.
Starkey won the 100 fly in 1:04.75, the 100 back in 1:01.64 was on the 400 free relay team.
She was also the leadoff leg in the winning 200 medley relay with Schauer, sophomore Mya Parsons (Castle Rock, Colo./Arapahoe) and freshman Gabbie Grant (St. Clair Shores, Mich./Lakeview) in
Senior Marissa Taylor (Granite Falls, N.C./South Caldwell) won the 500 free in 5:35.96 and the 200 I.M. in 2:22.06.
Sophomore Abby Schauer (Beavercreek) won the 100 breast in 1:15.00 and tied for top honors in the 50 back in :30.07.
Sophomore Maddy Markwood (Anchor Bay, Mich.) won the 50 breast in :32.98.
Freshman Sofia Vazquez (Fulshear, Tex./Tompkins) won the 3-meter diving unopposed with 316.45 poiunts for 11 dives.
The Polar Bears will return to action next Saturday when they host Baldwin Wallace on Senior Day.
WRESTLING
ADA — The Ohio Northern wrestling team got a pin from sophomore Chase Sumner (Ada), but fell 36-12 at No. 6-ranked Baldwin Wallace in a battle of Ohio Athletic Conference unbeatens in the Lou Higgins Center on Sunday.
The Polar Bears fall to 2-1 overall and are 2-1 in the OAC, while the Yellow Jackets improve to 3-0, 3-0.
Sumner won by fall just 47 seconds into the 149-pound bout to tie it at 12-12.
After BW won at 125 and 133, freshman Ross Rayfield (Delta) won by injury default at 141 to make it 12-6.
The Yellow Jackets then won the next six matches to clinch the match.
There were three bouts between top-10 competitors in the dual.
At 157, No. 2-ranked Dalton Leightner of BW topped No. 10-ranked senior Schuyler Caprella (Harrod/Allen East) by fall in 4:32.
BW's No. 3-ranked Stanley Bleich then edged No. 8 junior Jordan Hardrick (Dayton/Wayne) 3-1.
Doug Byrne, who is ranked No. 6 at 184 pounds, went up a class and won by decision 6-0 over No. 6-ranked senior Cash Thompson (Lake Odessa, Mich./Lakewood) at 197 pounds.
The Polar Bears will wrap up their regular season next weekend when they host a quad meet with Muskingum, Otterbein and Wilmington at the ONU Sports Center.
