Advice from Tom Miller, Ada-Liberty Township EMS chief

Things to do before going to an emergency care center or emergency room

Tom Miller, Ada-Liberty Township EMS chief, provided the Icon with several important steps for persons to follow if they have questions about the coronavirus.  Those steps follow:

• If you believe you have virus symptoms, and need information, do not go to an urgent care facility or hospital emergency room.

He recommends three options people should take first:|
• Visit the Ohio Department of Health website:
coronavirus.oh.gov

• Call the Ohio Department of Health hotline for further information: 833-427-5634

• Call your primary care physician

If you do not have a primary care physician, or cannot reach your primary physician:
•St. Rita’s Mercy Health and Lima Memorial Hospital have collaborated to assist persons who many not have a primary physician. This is for persons experiencing symptoms and need answers before going to an urgent care or emergency room.

Persons may call the collaborative at: 419-226-9000

Second:
• If you believe you are in a life-threatening situation – no matter what the situation – call 911. In Hardin County that call goes to the Hardin County Sheriff’s office. The dispatcher may ask you some additional questions to determine the seriousness or type of your illness.

The 911 dispatch will contact your local EMS and will assess them of your situation. That assessment will enable the EMS to equip themselves properly to handle your situation.

Miller said, “The EMS will respond and treat you, but we need to know your situation before responding to your call because we may need to put on additional protective equipment, based upon your symptoms.”

He added: “This is also a normal flu season. Your symptoms may be the common flu. Remain calm and follow the instructions listed here before going to the ER.”

Finally:
To protect yourself and to minimize spreading germs:
• continue to wash your hands
• maintain social distance from others
• avoid crowds
