ONU sweeps John Carroll in OAC tourney opener
The No. 12-ranked Ohio Northern volleyball team swept John Carroll 25-12, 25-23, 25-13 in the quarterfinals of the Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament on Tuesday night at the ONU Sports Center.
The top-seeded Polar Bears (24-5 overall) advance to the semifinals on Thursday where they will host fifth-seeded Baldwin Wallace at 7 pm at the ONU Sports Center.
The eighth-seeded Blue Streaks end their season at 19-11.
Senior Sydney Bapst (Grove City) had 14 kills and hit .452 and senior McKenna Jordan (Toldeo/St. Ursula) had 11 kills and hit .417 to lead the ONU offense.
JCU was led by Cassie Calamunci with 12 kills.
Northern dominated the first half of all three sets, racing to leads of 15-5 in set one, 14-7 in set two and a 14-6 lead in set three.
The Blue Streaks rallied in the second set with a 12-6 run to pull within 20-19.
But the two teams traded side-outs the rest of the way and a kill by senior All-American Chelsea Huppert(Bremen, Ind.) to win the set 25-23.
Sophomore Madi Ellis (Delphos/St. John's) hit .583 with eight kills on just 12 attempts and junior Katie Wade(Battle Creek, Mich./Harper Creek) dished out 37 assists for Ohio Northern.
The Polar Bears had a hitting percentage of .316 with 46 kills, 10 errors, and 114 attacks, while the Blue Streaks hit .056 with 29 kills, 22 errors, and 125 attacks.
