Seniors Sam Shook (New Philadelphia) and Maddy Reed (Piketon) were named Ohio Northern's Clyde Lamb Award winners for the 2018-19 academic year at the 2019 Ohio Athletic Conference Awards Banquet at the Crowne Plaza in Columbus on Monday evening.
The prestigious award is the highest honor given to OAC student-athletes each year, including one male and one female representative from the league's 10 institutions.
To receive the honor, an athlete must be a senior and have participated in an OAC-sponsored sport for at least two seasons, maintain a minimum 3.00 grade point average, and show sportsmanlike conduct in a manner that has brought credit to the student-athlete and his or her institution.
Shook, a left tackle on the football team studying in Ohio Northern's MSA Program, was named First-Team D3football.com All-America, Second-Team Associated Press All-America, First-Team D3football.com All-North Region, First-Team All-OAC and the OAC Lineman-of-the-Year, and a Mayo Clinic CoSIDA Comeback Player of the Year for the 2018 campaign.
The four-year letterman is also a three-time Academic All-OAC honoree and a two-time captain for the football program.
Off the football field, Shook is a member of the Unity Council and a volunteer for the Special Olympics, the ONU youth football camp, and Victory Day.
During the 2019 season, the senior appeared in all 10 games on the offensive line and was the highest-rated offensive lineman for the Polar Bears with a grade of 89 percent.
In his four-year career, Shook has played in 26 games at Ohio Northern.
Reed, who competed on the women's track and field team from 2016-2018, is a fourth-year pharmacy student at Ohio Northern.
During her career, Reed was the 2018 NCAA Division III national champion in the pole vault, a four-time All-American, a six-time All-Great Lakes Region honoree, a two-time OAC champion, a four-time All-OAC recipient, and the 2017 OAC Field Athlete of the Year during the indoor season. She also owns the indoor and outdoor pole vault records at ONU, the All-Ohio outdoor record, and became the first woman to vault 4.00 meters in OAC history.
In the classroom, she has been honored on the Dean's List three times and been tabbed to the USTFCCCA All-Academic squad.
On campus, Reed has served as the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee Treasurer, the Kappa Psi Pharmaceutical Fraternity Athletic Chair, the American Society of Consultant Pharmacists Research Assistant and Treasurer, and the Polar Pediatrics Advocacy Chair. She has also been involved with Ada Friends and Ada Civic Engagement Day and been a volunteer for the American Red Cross.
The award, which was founded in 1985, was named in honor of Clyde A. Lamb.
Lamb organized the Department of Health and Physical Education at Ohio Northern in 1929, serving as a coach, department chair, and athletics director from 1929-1964. He continued to teach full-time until his death in 1969.
Lamb received his bachelor's degree from Coe College in 1923 and a master's degree from Columbia University in 1929.
In 1959, he was elected to the NAIA Helms Hall of Fame. He was honored as "Ada's Distinguished Citizen" in 1956 and inducted into Ohio Northern's Athletic Hall of Fame in 1969.
