The Ohio Northern women's tennis team lost only eight games en route to a convincing 9-0 victory over NAIA opponent Saint Francis (Ind.) on Sunday afternoon at the Westwood Tennis and Fitness Center.
The Polar Bears improve to 9-3 on the season, while the Cougars fall to 2-15.
Senior Ashley Ochsenhirt (Birmingham, Ala./Briarwood Christian), junior Katie Curry (Oxford/Talawanda), freshman Abigail Staskiewicz (Mars, Pa./Oakland Catholic) and junior Jordan Dodson (Worthington) all won their singles matches by 6-0, 6-0 scores at Nos., 1, 3, 4 and 6, respectively.
Ochsenhirt and junior Mackenzie Wills (Ada) won 8-0 at No. 1 doubles.
Freshman Olivia Schrager (Dayton/Miami Valley) won at No. 2 singles 6-2, 6-0 and Wills won at No. 5 singles 6-2, 6-0.
Schrager and junior Kaleigh Cummins (Mars, Pa./Oakland Catholic) won 8-2 at No. 2 doubles and Curry and Staskiewicz won 8-2 at No. 3 doubles.
The Polar Bears will begin the Ohio Athletic Conference portion of their schedule on Saturday against Mount Union.
Men's tennis
The Ohio Northern men's tennis team evened its record at 5-5 on the season with a 9-0 shutout of NAIA foe Saint Francis (Ind.) on Sunday afternoon at the Westwood Tennis and Fitness Center.
Sophomore Vinh Thai (Galloway/St. Charles) and freshman Noah Elliott (Hilliard/Davidson) won 8-1 at No. 1 doubles and won at Nos. 1 and 2 singles to lead ONU.
Thai won 6-1, 6-0 and Elliott won 6-0, 6-0 in singles play.
Northern led 3-0 after doubles as freshman Zach Beaschler (Ada) and sophomore Hoang Do (Powell/Olentangy Liberty) won 8-2 at No. 2 and freshmen Andrew Cochran (Wooster) and Nate Meadors (Dublin/Jerome) won 8-5 at No. 3.
Beaschler then won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 3 singles, Do won 6-4, 6-1 at No. 4 singles, Cochran won 6-0, 6-2 at No. 5 singles and junior Connor Christian (Gallipolis/ Gallia Academy) won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 6 singles to complete the sweep.
The Polar Bears will return to action on Tuesday with a 4 pm contest at Ohio Wesleyan.
