7th year for Ohio Northern University

Named a Tree Campus USA

FROM ONU ART AND DESIGN FACEBOOK - This past spring, for the seventh time, Ohio Northern University was named a Tree Campus USA by the non-profit Arbor Day Foundation.

Tree Campus USA, a national program launched in 2008 by the Arbor Day Foundation and Toyota Motor North America Inc., honors colleges and universities and their leaders for promoting healthy trees and engaging students and staff in the spirit of conservation.

To obtain this recognition, Ohio Northern met the five core standards for sustainable campus forestry required by Tree Campus USA, including:

• establishment of a tree advisory committee,
• evidence of a campus tree-care plan,
• dedicated annual expenditures for its campus tree program,
• an Arbor Day observance and
• the sponsorship of student service-learning projects.

In the department of art & design, students in the Persuasive Design course designed an Urban Forest Project for the Village of Ada.

The project persuaded the local community to plant at least one tree and included educational aspects that would support the Village’s Tree City USA initiative, including street banners along Main Street.
