Concert by Another Round highlights ONU rock ‘n’ roll class
The group Another Round will headline a concert at 8 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 24, in the McIntosh Center Bear Cave at Ohio Northern University. The concert is part of the “History of Rock ‘n’ Roll in the 1960s” course this fall, which explores history through the lens of rock music. The concert is free and open to the public.
Faculty members Tom Hunt, Rebecca Casey and Ray Schuck, along with vocal group Opus 4, will perform prior to Another Round taking the stage.
The course looks at how society and rock music in the 1960s influenced each other, how rock ‘n’ roll music is a product of those times, and how rock music from that period continues to resonate in current music.
The class is an interdisciplinary endeavor taught by faculty members Schuck, assistant professor of history; Casey, associate professor of music; and William Mancuso, assistant professor of art.
The class meets from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. each Monday through Dec. 12 in room 230 of James F. Dicke Hall. Beyond ONU students, the class is open to community members.
The course covers a range of musical styles and social advances throughout the 1960s to explore and explain the roots of rock music as well as recent American culture. Among the musical offerings discussed by class members are soul music, the “British invasion,” psychedelic music, folk music as well as country and western. Among the cultural topics that are addressed are the Vietnam War and the civil rights movement.
An interesting feature of the course is its emphasis on how the music and societal changes of the 1960s influenced each other.
