ADA--Senior Nate Bascom became Ohio Northern's all-time points and assists leader, as the No. 8 Ohio Northern men's soccer team defeated Heidelberg by a 5-0 score Tuesday night at Mayer Field.
The Polar Bears are now 15-2 on the season and 6-0 in the OAC while Heidelberg falls to 8-6-1, 3-2-1.
The win also clinched the seveth consecutive OAC Tournament apperance for the Polar Bears.
Bascom became ONU all-time points leader early in the game when he took a pass from senior Cameron Johnson and beat the goalie to give Northern a 1-0 lead.
Bascom would then register his record breaking 34th assist early in the second half when he passed to junior Jeremy Barnes, who beat the goalie.
Bascom would also score the final goal of the night at the 71:16 mark of the game.
He is now the school leader in career points with 142 and career assists with 34. In addition, Bascom ranks second in school history with 54 goals, trailing only current ONU head coach Brent Ridenour who has 56.
Bascom now has 16 goals on the season which is tops on the team and the OAC.
Freshman Keegan Ross knocked home his 10th goal of the season at the 9:36 mark to extend the ONU lead to 2-0.
Junior Stephen Perkins scored for the second consecutive match, knocking in a deflection at the 31:18 mark of the first half to make it 3-0 in favor of ONU.
Barnes would then make it 4-0 and Bascom ended the scoring for the night.
Senior goalie Mac Church (15-2) registered his six straight shutout and 43rd of his career by making one save.
The Polar Bears have now not given up a goal in an amazing 585 minutes and 10 seconds.
Matthew Stevens made three saves for the Student Princes and falls to 8-6-1.
The Polar Bears outshot Heidelberg by an 18-6 margin.
ONU also held the advantage in shots on goal, 8-1.
Ohio Northern will be in action again on Saturday when they host John Carroll at 3:30 pm, as the Polar Bears celebrate Senior Day.
