The Ohio High School Athletic Association Board of Directors met Thursday morning at the OHSAA office in Columbus for its regularly scheduled September meeting. The following are highlights from the meeting. The complete set of meeting minutes will be posted later at OHSAA.org.
- The financial reports from the OHSAA’s spring sports regional and state tournaments except track and field were presented to the Board. Of note, the boys tennis state tournament drew 1,078 fans and operated at a loss of $2,373. The baseball regional and state tournaments provided a profit of $51,400, with the state tournament drawing 15,934 fans to Huntington Park in Columbus. The softball regional and state tournaments provided a profit of $20,029, with the state tournament drawing 8,773 fans to Firestone Stadium in Akron. The financial report from the regional and state track and field tournaments will be presented to the Board at its October meeting.
- The track and field coaches association proposed that the triple jump be included as a recognized event during the OHSAA track and field post-season tournaments. The Board is expected to vote on the proposal at its December meeting. The board did not pass a similar proposal last year.
- Six schools were recently penalized for committing infractions of OHSAA bylaws or sports regulations. The complete list of schools, along with their infractions and the penalties, will be included in the complete meeting minutes, but media members may obtain the list earlier by requesting it via email from Tim Stried, OHSAA Director of Information Services.
- The Board presented its list of goals for the 2012-13 school year. Among the goals are promoting sportsmanship, ethics and integrity; examining the future of interscholastic athletics and the OHSAA; continuing to review technology, communications and junior high programs; continuing the promotion of education-based athletics, and implementing the tournament finances turnkey process.
- The preseason manuals for the winter sports were approved and will be sent to all member schools. Of note, schools may schedule no more than 35 regular-season hockey games beginning this season.
- Approximately 700 school administrators attended either the OHSAA's New Administrators Workshop held the first week in August in Columbus or one of the four OHSAA Regional Update Meetings that were held last month in Hudson, Dublin, Bowling Green and Kettering. The seminars are annual opportunities for school administrators to review key OHSAA regulations to try to minimize eligibility issues before the school year begins and to discuss other current topics of concern.
- An update was provided to the member high school list presented at the August board meeting, as an additional school did not renew membership for 2012-13 (Dayton Nicholas-Liberty). That brings the total number of member high schools this school year to 823.
- Per OHSAA Constitution item 7-6-2, four vacancies on District Athletic Boards were recently appointed by the board for the 2012-13 school year. Three of the new district board members are in the Northwest District and include Brenda Frankart, principal at Liberty-Benton High School, as the female representative; Jason Selgo, principal at Ottawa-Glandorf High School, as the AA representative, and Mike Bute, principal at Antwerp High School, as the A representative. In the Central District, Tyrone Olverson, principal at Licking Heights High School, was named the AA representative. In addition, Jim Hayes, former athletic administrator at Ashville Teays Valley High School, was named the Central District treasurer. The interim district board representatives and other qualified school representatives will be eligible to run to fill the respective unexpired terms during the regular election process that takes place next May.
