Kenneth Reid awarded IEEE-USA Professional Achievement Award

Kenneth Reid, Ohio Northern University’s director of engineering education and first-year engineering, and associate professor of electrical and computer engineering, has been awarded the 2013 IEEE-USA Professional Achievement Award for “pioneering undergraduate engineering education curriculum” for the development of ONU’s Bachelor of Science for engineering education program.

Hardin County sales tax rate increases on Sept. 1

Neil Reichenbach of Reichenbach and Steiner, CPAs, Bluffton, reminds Icon viewers that the Ohio sales tax rate will increase by one-quarter percent (.25 percent), on Sept. 1.

His message is to consumers and retailers in the Icon viewership area. To retailers, he said, "You should increase the sales tax that you charge to your customers on all invoices dated on or after Sept. 1 by one-quarter percent. Also, make the appropriate changes in your computer, cash register and manual calculations."

He provided a partial listing of various county sales tax rates. To obtain a complete list click here.

Ada Public Library offers free Zumba classes this fall

The Ada Public Library will be offering free Zumba classes throughout September and October.  

According to Amanda Bennett, library director, licensed Zumba instructor Lynne Scott will offer the first orientation class this Saturday, August 31 at 11 a.m..  

Classes will then begin on Saturday, September 14 at 11 a.m. and run each Saturday thereafter through Saturday, October 26.  Each class will run roughly 40 minutes.

Kiwanis Club hears update from ONU AD Thomas Simmons

President Myrna McCurdy called the weekly meeting of the Ada Kiwanis Club to order at 12 noon on Tuesday August 27 at McIntosh Center, ONU.

Jon Umphress offered the invocation.

Tom Simmons, ONU Director of Athletics was welcomed as a guest.

The 58th wedding anniversary of Mark and Julie Shull (August 28, 1955) was noted.

Nancy Marie Poe Yoakam was a former member of the USV school board

Nancy Marie (Poe) Yoakam, age 73, died on Wednesday, August 28, 2013 at 9:05 am at Lima Memorial Health System, Lima.

She was born on February 26, 1940 in Hardin County, Ohio to Edward and Susie (Allen) Poe and they preceded her in death. On June 8, 1957 she married Harold L. Yoakam and he survives in Alger.

Nancy was a homemaker and she previously worked at Dave's Market in Kenton for several years. She was a member of the McGuffey Church of Christ. Nancy was a graduate of the McGuffey High School class of 1957 and she previously attended Hi-Point in accounting. Nancy was a former member of the Upper Scioto Valley School Board for four years. 

Changes made to school website; procedures for parents revised

The Ada school website has a change this year in the manner that parents' access the site for student's Progress Book Gradebook data.

Parents are now able to create and manage their own user accounts with an individual Registration Key. Due to this change your old login information from previous year's is no longer valid.

Parents in grades one through five should have receive their registration keys in letter form in their child's book bag on Aug. 26.  Parents in grades six through 12 will receive their letters through the mail soon.
