ONU softball team bows out of NCAA III World Series

Salem, Va. -- A solo home run in the bottom of the sixth inn ing broke a 1-1 tie and lifted No. 6 Luther (Iowa) past No. 25 Ohio Northern 2-1 in Game 5 of the NCAA III Softball World Series Saturday morning at Moyer Park.

The Norse improve to 41-8 and advance in the loser's bracket. They will face the loser of Saturday's night's game between No. 15 Plattsburgh State (N.Y.) and Roanoke (Va.) on Sunday at 2:30 pm.

The Polar Bears end their season at 31-14.

I'll Have Another to Win the Triple Crown?

Triple Crown hopeful I’ll Have Another likely will face 12 challengers in the Belmont Stakes in his bid to become the first Derby/Preakness/Belmont winner since Affirmed in 1978, the Daily Racing Form reports.

Optimizer is the only Preakness Stakes starter other than I’ll Have Another likely to run in the June 9 Belmont.

Proposed Competitive balance issue using ‘athletic counts’ for team sports fails again by slim margin

Thirteen of the 14 proposed Ohio High School Athletic Association Constitution and Bylaw revisions passed as voted upon by OHSAA member schools, Commissioner Daniel B. Ross, Ph.D., has announced. Changes were approved to three Constitution items and 10 Bylaw items.

The bylaw issue that did not pass for the second consecutive year was a proposal to change how schools are assigned to tournament divisions in the team sports of football, soccer, volleyball, basketball, baseball and softball to address competitive balance.

Polar Bears advance to NCAA III Softball World Series with 7-5 victory over Trine

Senior Cassie Gaye drilled a 3-run home run and sophomore Dani Steepe was outstanding in the circle to lead No. 25 Ohio Northern past No. 16 Trine (Ind.) 7-5 in the championship game of the NCAA III Regionals Monday morning at Scots Field.
The second-seeded Polar Bears advance to the NCAA Division III World Series with a 31-12 record, while the top-seeded Thunder ends its season at 40-10.

ONU will play No. 3-ranked Linfield (Ore.) in the first round of the World Series Friday at 10 am in Salem, Va.

Gaye blasted a 3-run home run in the top of the first inning to stake the Polar Bears to a quick 3-0 lead.

OHSAA Board of Directors Meeting Highlights – May 10

The Ohio High School Athletic Association Board of Directors met last Thursday morning in Columbus for its regularly scheduled May meeting. The following are highlights from the meeting. The complete set of meeting minutes will be posted at OHSAA.org.

- The Board approved the 2012-13 general sports regulations and the sport-by-sport regulations. Of note, the start date for football practice this fall is July 30 and all other fall sports begin practice on the first Monday in August, which is August 6.

6 ONU athletes named to All-Ohio Athletic Conference in softball

Six Ohio Northern student/athletes were named All-Ohio Athletic Conference in softball for 2012 in voting conducted by the league's 10 head coaches.

Seniors Cassie Gaye and Kimi Blewett, sophomore Christin Miller and freshman Kelly Sheridan were all name First Team All-OAC, junior Abbey Bensing was named to the Second Team and senior Katie Cretin was named Honorable Mention All-Conference.

Gaye was second on the team with a .405 batting average and five home runs and was third with 29 RBI and 30 runs scored.
