ONU women double the score

Senior Jenna Dirksen (Beavercreek/Carroll) led 13 Ohio Northern players in the scoring column with 12 points as ONU defeated area-rival Defiance 90-45 on Tuesday evening at the ONU Sports Center.

 

The Polar Bears improve to 3-0 overall and have now won eight consecutive home openers, dating to the 2010-11 season.

Sophomore Emily Brock added 11 points and freshman Annie Weckesser scored 10 points for Ohio Northern.

The Yellow Jackets are now 0-4.

Bruns gains OAC honor

Senior All-American Ryan Bruns  has been named the Ohio Athletic Conference Athlete of the Week for men's basketball.

 

He paced the team with 26.5 points per game, 8.5 rebounds per contest, six blocked shots, and four steals last week in 61 minutes on the floor.

The senior center propelled the Polar Bears to two victories last week over area-rival Defiance on Nov. 12 and in-state foe Denison on Nov. 17.

ONU football players honored

Ten Ohio Northern student/athletes were named All-Ohio Athletic Conference in football for 2018 in voting conducted by the league's 10 head coaches.

 

Leading the list of Polar Bears grabbing All-OAC honors was senior left tackle Sam Shook(New Philadelphia), who was named the Ken Wable Offensive Lineman of the Year.

Other ONU players joining Shook as First Team honorees were senior receiver Chad Rex(Brandenton, Fla./Lakewood Ranch), senior kicker Chase Watson (Lima/Elida) and junior linebacker Mark Niles (Miramar, Fla.)

300th win for Coach Durand

MEADVILLE. Pa. — The Ohio Northern women's basketball team capped off an undefeated opening weekend with a 74-56 victory over tournament host Allegheny (Pa.) Saturday afternoon in the Allegheny Tip-Off Tournament, giving head women's basketball coach Michele Durand her 300th victory in her 18-year tenure at ONU.

Coach Durand now stands at 300-163 in her coaching career at Northern, which equates to a .648 winning percentage, making her the winningest coach in program history. She owns 421 career victories overall, which includes her time at ONU and an 11-year stint at nearby NCAA Division III institution Bluffton.
