Ada girls swamped in NWC opener

ADA - The host Ada girls basketball team fell behind big out of the gate and lost convincingly 54-15 to Columbus Grove in the Northwest Conference opener Thursday night.

The purple and gold dropped to 0-2 (0-1 NWC) after the defeat. Defending league champion Grove improved to 2-2 (1-0 NWC) with their second straight victory.

CG used a sticky fullcourt zone press to help force eight Ada turnovers on their first nine possessions. The visitors capitalized on the miscues to race to a 16-0 lead, and were never threatened.

ADA - The Bulldog varsity swim team has a new coach with a familiar face this winter in an Ada native.

Former Bulldog and Ohio Northern University swimmer Katey Stuart assumes the reins of the Ada swim program this season.

Stuart is a pharmacy major at ONU, and has finished her eligibility for the Polar Bear swim team. She will get coaching help from former Ada swimmer Zach Beaschler.

Due to the pandemic, for the first time in almost 20 years the team is unable to practice at the ONU natatorium. Instead, the squad has to practice at the Kenton YMCA.

ADA - The Ada varsity wrestling program enters its second season under head coach David Ames featuring some seasoned grapplers ready to make a run to districts and beyond.

Six of the nine matmen on the roster are returning lettermen, with three promising freshmen boasting plenty of youth wrestling experience. 

One returning wrestler won a match at the district level last season, while another qualified as an alternate at districts.

Three seniors, one junior and two sophomores complete the roster.

The squad has basic goals for the season with the pandemic affecting everything on a day-by-day basis.

ADA - The host Ada girls basketball team lost a 43-40 nailbiter to county foe Hardin Northern Tuesday night in the hard-fought season-opener for the Lady Bulldog cagers.

The purple and gold fell to 0-1 after the tough defeat in their delayed lidlifter. HN improved to 1-2 with the victory, having lost to Botkins and Riverside before Thanksgiving.

Ada got off a last-second shot at a potential tying three-pointer, but the right side 20-footer was just off and Northern narrowly held on for the win.

ADA - Despite the pandemic and costly losses due to injuries, the 2020-21 Ada girls basketball team looks to continues its steady upward climb to increased competitiveness under third-year head coach Morgan Bass.

Six letter winners and four starters are back from a team that went 7-15 overall (0-8 in Northwest Conference) last season. Ada was markedly more competitive than the prior season, when they won one game. 

The team had no seniors on its roster last year, but lost two key players to injury before the first practice.

RIDGEWAY - The host Ridgemont boys basketball team edged spunky Hardin County rival Ada 59-58 in an overtime thriller Friday night in the season-opener.

Ada trailed 20-10 after one period of play. But the Bulldogs whittled the deficit to 28-24 by halftime as junior Cayden Murphy netted seven points in the second stanza. 

Ridgemont forged in front 46-39 heading to the fourth period behind 10 points from Landon Newland in the third period. Yet Ada rallied with a 15-8 closing run as Micah Cook and Jacob Poling each scored five points, and Tristan Conley added a three-pointer.
