Pitcovich earns NCAA Elite 90 award in DIII Cross Country

ONU Senior Tessa Pitcovich (Stow/Stow-Munroe Falls) finished 139th out of 293 runners at the 2021 NCAA Division III Women's Cross Country Championships on Saturday, November 20, at Tom Sawyer State Park in Louisville, KY.

Though she didn't finish among the top 40 as an All-American, Pitcovich stood in even more rarefied air after the race, earning the NCAA Elite 90 award for Division III women's cross country.

The Elite 90 is presented to the student-athlete with the highest cumulative grade-point average participating at the finals site for each of the NCAA's 90 championships.

Bulldog boys continue rebuild under new head coach

New Ada varsity head coach Vince Halliday realizes the challenges inherent to rebuilding the Ada boys basketball program.

Three lettermen and one full-time starter return from a Bulldog team that finished 3-19 overall as they dropped seven close games. Ada also went 1-7 in Northwest Conference play.

Halliday served as the head girls varsity coach at Lima Senior for the past 14 seasons, compiling the most wins in program history (161) at a slightly-above .500 clip. 

"I will be the third head coach in three years for the seniors, so I told the group they all have a clean slate to start out with me," noted Halliday after he was hired. 

Lady Bulldogs nipped by McComb in basketball opener

The visiting Ada girls basketball team led late but lost 28-27 at McComb on a last-minute three-pointer in the season lidlifter Friday night, November 19.

The Lady Bulldogs led 18-14 at halftime and held a 23-20 advantage going into the fourth period.

But with McComb down 27-25, Panther Madison Schroeder canned a three-point goal with 14 seconds left to give the hosts a one-point lead.

Ada got off a potential winning shot in the final seconds, but missed.

Lady Bulldog cagers to overcome depth issue with strong guard play

The 2021-22 Ada girls basketball team enters its fourth season under head coach Morgan Bass hoping to combat low roster numbers behind their three experienced returning guards.

Just nine players comprise the program, so there is no junior varsity squad this season.

Five letter winners and three starters are back from a team that went 5-15 overall (1-7 in Northwest Conference) last season. 

"We are going to roll with who we have," said Bass. "It is tough because we have a lack of numbers for practice."

Ada bodybuilder medals in first competition

Ada resident and bodybuilder Lacey Fisher competed for the first time at the NPC Natural Indianapolis competition on November 13. She earned 1st place in the Open Class, Runner up in Class B and earned a position on stage for the Miss Indianapolis Bikini where she was runner up.

Fisher graduated from Ada High School and trains at One More gym, 125 E Buckeye Ave, Ada.

Heidelberg edges ONU 33-32 in Bendekovic Bowl

The 11th annual Bendekovic Bowl may have been the most exciting in the series.

There were three touchdowns scored in the game's final 1:45, including the game-winner with just eight seconds left as Heidelberg edged Ohio Northern 33-32 on Saturday afternoon, Novembrer 13, at Dial-Roberson Stadium.

The Polar Bears end their season 4-6 overall and finished 3-6 in the Ohio Athletic Conference, while the Student Princes end their season at 8-2, 7-2.

Senior Brody Hahn (Louisville) threw a 14-yard touchdown pass to junior Jette Morgan (Wooster) with 45 seconds left to give ONU a 33-28 lead.
