Late spurt lifts Bulldog boys over NK

The Ada High School boys basketball team finished on an 8-2 run to defeat visiting New Knoxville 47-42 in a hard-fought non-conference battle Thursday night, December 23.

Clutch junior guard Spencer Wall sank a driving layup and a driving bank shot 25 seconds apart to put the Bulldogs ahead 43-40 with 2:11 remaining.

Ada junior Carter Conley and Wall each canned two free throws in the final 41 seconds to preserve the win.

The Bulldogs improved to 4-4 overall with their second straight victory, and they surpassed last season's win total with the triumph. 

NK dropped to 1-8 with the defeat.

69 ONU student-athletes named Academic All-OAC

A school record 69 Ohio Northern student/athletes were named Academic All-Ohio Athletic Conference in the six fall sports for 2021.

The ONU football and men's cross country teams set school records with its number of Academic All-OAC honorees.

Football had a league-best 20 players named Academic All-OAC, while the men's cross country led all schools with 13 award winners.

Northern's women's soccer team had 13 honorees, men's soccer had nine, and women's cross country and volleyball had seven each.

The award winners must be a sophomore or higher in class standing, maintain varsity status and have a cumulative grade-point-average of at least 3.50.

Ada wrestlers compete in hostile road setting

The Ada HIgh School wrestling team traveled to Bucyrus Wednesday, December 22, for a rare mid-week afternoon dual match. 

"It was definitely a different sort of environment," said Ada head coach Eric Perkins. "When you get their whole school packed into the gym being loud and rooting against you, it can be a very tough challenge mentally. 

"I thought our guys did a great job rising to that challenge, staying aggressive and focused on the right things."

The contest was conducted with Bucyrus still in school, so there was a large student crowd on hand. Buoyed by the crowd, the host Redmen defeated Ada, 60-7.

Short-staffed Ada girls fall to Wildcat comeback

Playing at home, the Ada High School girls basketball team led for most of their December 21 game but succumbed to Kenton 42-39 in a spirited non-conference contest.

With just seven players suited up, the short-handed Lady Bulldogs played with a lot of intensity but ultimately ran out of gas and size.

The feisty Ada girls dropped to 2-7 with the hard-fought defeat. The Lady Wildcats improved to 3-5 with the comeback win.

"I was proud of our effort," said fourth-year Lady Bulldog head coach Morgan Bass. "All seven players communicated and played as a team; "We were focused and engaged from the start."

Bulldog girl swimmers beat VW at tri meet

The Ada High School girls swim team defeated host Van Wert last Thursday evening, December 16, in a tri-meet.

The Lady Bulldogs beat Van Wert 46-25, and lost a close meet to Elida 48-41. The Lady Bulldogs are 4-2 this season in dual meets.

The Bulldog boys (3-3) lost to Van Wert 43-12, and fell to Elida 54-18. 

The VW boys also edged Elida 43-35, but the Elida girls beat the Cougar girls 59-27.

"I’m really happy with how each of the kids swam," said Ada head coach Katey Stuart. "It was only our second meet of the season, but everyone improved from last week. 

Ada mat men battle Wildcats, Panthers

The Ada wrestling team entertained Bath and McComb Monday evening, December 20, in a tri-match. 

Due to several individual weight class forfeits, there were no official team score results. Five bouts were held in each Bulldog match, with nine of the 10 decided by fall.

Ada finished ahead of Bath 18-12 and was behind McComb, 18-12.

Bulldog Trevor McGue won his bout vs. McComb's Carter Scheff with a pin at 5:07 in the third round at 132 lbs.

Ada's Josh Arnett won via pin at 157 lbs. 15 seconds into round two over Panther Trace Bryan.

Bulldog Clayton McClain lost a hard-fought match at 138 lbs. to McComb's Daniel Rader by an 8-4 decision.
