Icon holiday schedule

The Bluffton Icon and Ada Icon will take an extended holiday break for Christmas and New Year’s. Except for breaking news, which may include sports, the Icon staff will be taking a holiday from December 23-26 and from December 30-January 2.

Officer Dominic Francis Memorial Highway approved

On Wednesday, December 14, a local contingent witnessed the legislative steps creating the Officer Dominic Francis Memorial Highway between mile markers 139 and 143 on Interstate 75 in Bluffton. The group met with House Speaker Robert Cupp (R-Lima) and Jon Cross (R-Kenton), toured the state house and, according to Bluffton Police Chief Ryan Burkholder, “were given the red carpet treatment.”

Those present were JAMPD Park Ranger Chad Cupples, who initiated the request to create a memorial highway; Ricki Francis, widow of Officer Francis; Taylor Born, daughter of Officer Francis; Bluffton Police Chief Ryan M. Burkholder, Sgt. Tyler Hochstetler, and Lt. Matt Oglesbee. The group was introduced to legislators from the balcony.

AHS girls basketball falls to late Pirate run

BLUFFTON - The visiting Ada High School girls basketball team hung close to rival Bluffton for over three quarters in a Northwest Conference battle before succumbing 55-43 Thursday night, December 15.

The Lady Bulldogs trailed just 36-35 heading into the fourth period. But the Pirate girls hit eight free throws and outscored Ada 19-8 in the fourth quarter to win by 12.

The Bulldog girls fell to 4-5 overall and 0-3 in the NWC with the tough defeat. The Pirate girls improved to 5-2 and 1-1 in the NWC with the hard-fought win that snapped a two-game losing skid.

 Barbara Ruth Bushong funeral arrangements

Barbara Ruth Bushong, age 80, of Lima, formerly of Ada, passed away on Wednesday, December 14, 2022, at Lima Memorial Health System. 

She was born on December 23, 1941, in Harrod, Ohio, to the late Oren E. and Mildred (Long) Engle. On July 28, 1961, Barbara married Walter Junior Bushong, who died on October 21, 2005. 

Barbara is survived by her two children: Bill (Laura) Bushong of McGuffey, and Merle “Lou” (Donald) DeWitt of McGuffey; six grandchildren, and twelve great grandchildren; and a sister, Anita (Jerry) Marshall of Harrod.

She was preceded in death by her brother, Phillip Engle.

Women's basketball nears top 25 in Week 3 poll

The Ohio Northern women's basketball team sits just outside the top 25 of the Week 3 D3hoops.com Top 25 Poll.

The Polar Bears (7-1 overall, 3-0 OAC) received 38 points and are listed first among teams in the "others receiving votes" category, putting them at No. 26 in the poll.

Northern received 26 points in last week's poll and was listed second among teams in the "others receiving votes" category.

Hope (Mich.) is the top-ranked team in the poll, receiving 615 points and 20 of 25 first-place votes.

The D3hoops.com Top 25 is voted on by a panel of 25 coaches, sports information directors and media members from across the country and is published weekly.

Ada CIC will hold last meeting for 2022

The Ada Community Improvement Corporation (https://www.adaoh.org/ada-community-improvement-corporation-cic) has announced a meeting at noon on December 21, to be held at The Depot, 9 Central Ave.
