Local organizers note: Youth soccer referees are always needed

UPDATED with information on earning potential

Shortages of referees in youth sports is news across the nation. Currently the Ada, Ohio Soccer Association is encouraging local supporters to consider becoming a Youth Soccer Referee and providing information on how to get involved.

Local officials also note, "you can recoup the cost of becoming certified fairly quickly and then everything after that is extra money in your pocket."

Amelia "Molly" Mathewson was a registered nurse

Amelia "Molly" Mathewson, age 42, of Ada, passed away at home on Friday, February 10, 2023, surrounded by her loving family.  

She was born on February 11, 1980, in Lima, Ohio, to Gary Lee and Judith Muriel (Schmenk) McCurdy. Molly was preceded in death by her father. On August 25, 2001, she married her best friend Clint and he survives in Ada with their son Jude.

Molly is survived by her mother; sisters Katy (Eric) Atkinson and Cari (Dan) DeVaughn; brothers Joe (Emily) Bruskotter and Mick (Frances) Bruskotter; and mother and father-in-law Shirley and Bret Mathewson.

Marathon V.P. to be ONU Black History Month keynote speaker

CORRECTION The Spotts Lecture takes place on Monday, Feb. 27 at 4 p.m.

Ohio Northern University will be observing Martin Luther King, Jr. Day and Black History Month with a keynote address by Germaine Hunter, vice president of talent acquisition and diversity, equity and inclusion at Marathon Petroleum Corporation. The presentation, to be held Monday, Feb. 27 at 4 p.m. in the College of Business’ Dicke Forum, will be free and open to the public.

Estell and Coffman-Wolph find teachable moments in Oregon Trail game

If you’re part of Gen X, chances are you tried to avoid death by dysentery and debated how many bullets to take with you on your Oregon Trail trip, provided courtesy of the still-popular pixelated video game. First released in 1971, the game, which has undergone several adaptations since then, was designed to help teach younger students about 19th century pioneers who journeyed along this historic westward route.
