Ada Barnyard Farmers 4-H report

On May 21, 2017 Ada Barnyard Farmers had another successful meeting.  Recreation was led by Wyatt Ferguson, in which he brought us in with the game Ninga.  Role call was led by Melia santillanez and the treasurers report was led by Riley Ferguson.  Unfinished business was the talk about the Garage sale.  It is going to be June 17 At 10810 Reservoir rd Ada, Ohio.  There will be items and baked goods, so make sure to come.  Demonstrations were by Alden Boulanger, Neilan Boulander, Hannah Beach, Kayla Wince, Alyssa Wince, Alex Beach.  Quality Assurance was done well by Rachel Underwood, one of our Advisors in our club.  Then we ended with refreshments by Alden and Neilan Boulanger, Dakota an

Unexpected Ada visitors

Bob and Janet Crawford had unexpected visitors at their front door on East North Avenue this week: two cecropia.

The beautiful moths hatched from a cocoon not far away. Janet shared the photos of her "find" with the Ada Icon.

A year and a half ago, large cecropia caterpillars were found on the buckhorn plants in front of Liberty National Bank. See the photos (below) of the caterpillars that Monty Siekerman photographed in August of 2015.

Cecropia Moth (Hyalophora cecropia) is North America's largest moth with a wingspan of 5-6 inches.

Blanchard Pleasant Buckeyes 4-H meeting report

The Blanchard Pleasant Buckeyes 4-H Club held a meeting Monday, May 22nd, at the Hardin Northern Ag Building.

Recreation was Capture the Flag, led by Heidi Trachsel. There was 39 members, 9 advisers, and 4 guests present.

Megan Miller gave a Treasurer's Report, Emma Miller talked over the minutes of the previous meeting, and Cassie Deckling led role call. Dienna Clem went over some Community Service ideas for the club. Cassie Deckling went over livestock deadlines, and Bob McBride talked about more demonstrations. Livestock exhibitors went over Quality Assurance.

Ada High School College Preparatory English students, in a class taught by Melody Veltri, (Part 1) were challenged with the question: "What do you believe?”  The assignment continued with an oral history segment, which follows.

Rielyn Castle, created a 47-minute video with her grandfather, Willard Castle of rural Ada, now in his 80s.

Kiwanis Club presents $3,950 in scholarships

The Ada Kiwanis Club awarded seven scholarships to Ada High School graduating seniors at the 36th annual senior honor awards dinner held at the school.

The total amount presented was $3,950.00.

Ada Kiwanis Club President Tom Kier made the presentations to the following graduating seniors: Meredith Marshall, Elizabeth Milks, Kaitlyn Long, Makayla Callahan, Shaheed Hasan Khan, Kyli Lause and Madeline Skiver.

Kier noted that the club has been privileged to present club scholarships for many years and that this year marks the first year that the club has presented seven scholarships.

Icon dog of the week- Angel

This is Angel. She is a one year old female beagle mix, She weighs 25 pounds. Can you provide her with a forever home?

To give a dog a forever home, contact the Hardin County dog shelter. It is located at 49 Jones Road on the west side of Kenton.

Hours: 9 am to 4 pm on Monday, Thursday, and Friday. Phone: 419-674-2209.

The shelter is also the place to contact for giving up a dog, if you find a lost or stray dog, or if you come in contact with a vicious dog. It costs $20 to surrender a dog, which pays for deworming and immunizations for when it is rescued.
