Ohio Northern University publishes undergraduate research journal

The editorial board of Aurora: The Undergraduate Research Journal at Ohio Northern University, announced the publication of its inaugural issue. 

The first issue is titled “Better You, Better ONU: Advances in athletics, public health and safety,”  and it showcases student-authored research using methods in pharmacy, kinesiology, civil engineering, biology and more to address pressing issues.

Among topics are active learning in classrooms, PTSD as a disease, training for increased lung capacity and breath-hold, streetlights and road safety, and a comparative analysis of athletes in soccer and lacrosse.

Both essay-length articles and posters are presented.

ONU faculty member a national "rising star"

J. Blake Hylton, engineering faculty member, receives 2020 National KEEN award

Ohio Northern University T.J. Smull College of Engineering faculty member J. Blake Hylton, Ph.D., has been selected to receive the 2020 National KEEN (Kern Entrepreneurial Engineering Network) Rising Star Award.

The honor recognizes faculty members who display an entrepreneurial mindset in their careers as educators and who contribute to the profession in that manner.

Hylton will receive a $10,000 grant from the Kern Family Foundation to advance KEEN’s mission and will receive his award at the 2021 KEEN National Conference.

Hylton, who joined the ONU faculty in 2015, is assistant professor of mechanical engineering.

Cincinnati student receives Freed leadership and service award

Hannah Smith of Cincinnati has received the 2020 Catherine Freed Outstanding Senior Female Leadership and Service Award from Ohio Northern University. Smith, a graduate of McAuley High School, earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Ohio Northern this spring.

Several Ohio Northern University faculty and students have received recognition this spring. Here is a summary of awards and new notes.

Students recognized by Ohio Council of Criminal Justice Education
Two students were recognized for excellence from the Ohio Council of Criminal Justice Education in 2020. Senior criminal justice student Katie Klamut earned the OCCJE Undergraduate Research Paper of the Year award for “Connecting Through the Wire: The Relationship Between Class, Race, Gender, and Police Brutality”  Law student Genc Nimoni earned the OCCJE Graduate Research Paper of the Year for “Rule of Law on State-building Societies - Republic of Kosovo.”

DeBow Freed, Alice-Kay Hilderbrand leadership, community service award winners announced

Ohio Northern University students, organizations honored

Several Ohio Northern University students have been recognized for their leadership on campus.

The DeBow Freed Award for Outstanding Student Leadership as an Undergraduate Student is presented annually to one male and one female student from each undergraduate class. The award recognizes recipients for their positive leadership in the campus community.

The first awards were presented in 1999 and are named in honor of the former president and president emeritus of the university, who dedicated his life to the virtue of servant leadership.
