Obituaries

Robert A. Hovis, 75, an ONU mathematics and computer science professor for 34 years, died Sunday, July 1, in Cleveland.

Dr. Hovis was instrumental in bringing the computer science major to ONU's mathematics department in 1978. He was a long-time department chair of mathematics and computer science and interim dean of the Getty College of Arts and Sciences. 

Darlene Carter, age 58, died on Sunday, July 1, 2018 at 12:07 a.m. at St. Rita’s Medical Center, Lima.

          She was born on November 10, 1959 in Lima, Ohio to the late Mitchell and Omalee (Patton) Bailey.  On May 15, 1993 Darlene married Gary Carter and he survives in Lima.

          Darlene was a homemaker and she owned her own cleaning service. 

Christina A. Williams, age 86, died on Thursday, June 28, 2018 at 1:57 p.m. at Lima Memorial Health System.

          She was born on December 24, 1931 in Floyd County, Kentucky to the late Willard and Rebecca (Patton) Bailey.  On August 25, 1947 Christina married Ned L. Williams, they celebrated 56 years together.  Ned preceded her in death on April 8, 2003.   

          Christina was a member of the Maysville United Methodist Church.  She taught Sunday school, led Bible studies and was President of the Ladies Missionary Circle.  Christina served as the secretary/treasurer for the Sunday school for over thirty years.

Dorothy J. Nichols, age 80, died on Thursday, June 28, 2018 at 10:05 a.m. at Lost Creek Care Center, Lima. 

          She was born on December 17, 1937 in Allen County, Ohio to the late Delbert and Opal (Shanks) Mayer.  On April 9, 1957 Dorothy married Eddie Nichols and he survives in Harrod.

          Dorothy was a homemaker and gardener.  She enjoyed spending time with family and friends.  

Melody A. Hadley, age 70, died on Wednesday, June 27, 2018 at 10:04 p.m. at Bridge Hospice, Blanchard Valley Health System, Findlay. 

          She was born on May 4, 1948 in Ashtabula, Ohio to the late Ray and Mary (Jones) Hare Sr.   On April 29, 1967 Melody married James Lee Hadley and he preceded her in death on November 16, 2017.

          Melody retired from Trumbull Memorial Hospital where she had worked in Medical Records.  She was a member of the Ada Family Center.

Wilma L. Spallinger, age 80, died on Monday, June 25, 2018 at 3:55 p.m. at St. Rita’s Medical Center, Lima.

          She was born on August 2, 1937 in Ft. Wayne, Indiana to the late William and Mary (Dunbar) Knell.  On May 20, 1956 Wilma married Herbert D. Spallinger and he survives in Ada.
