Freshman Will Freed throws for 439 yards in ONU win

By Tim Glon

Freshman Will Freed threw for 439 yards and three touchdowns in his first collegiate game to lead Ohio Northern to a 29-22 football victory over Utica (N.Y.) in its 2015 season opener Saturday afternoon at Dial-Roberson Stadium.

The Polar Bears improve to 1-0, while the Pioneers fall to 1-1.

Freed completed 27-of-36 passes and TD scores of 73, 56 and 8 yards in his college debut, marking the first time a freshman quarterback started a game for Ohio Northern since Ed Chessar in 1987.

His 439 yards passing is the second-most in ONU history, trailing only the record 452-yard effort by Shane Franzer at Hanover (Ind.) in the 1999 playoffs.

ReStore wants donations, but please be considerate

ReStore Community Center receives many donations on a daily basis, which the organization appreciates. But the Center has become a dumping ground for some people.

Bags of trash, dirty paper plates, etc. have been received recently.

Even mattresses have been left leaning against the building even though a sign, with large print, clearly states that mattresses are not accepted.

Dana Walters, executive director, asked the Ada Icon to publish this statement:

“We are pleased that this student survey again places ONU among the best universities in the country,” said Daniel A. DiBiasio, Ohio Northern University president. “This is reflective of the quality of our programs and personnel and the appreciation our students have for excellence.”

On council agenda: First reading of legislation that changes waste-recycling contractor

Ada council will consider the first reading of legislation authorizing Republic Services as the solid waste and recycling contractor for the village. The action is on the Tuesday, Sept. 15 council agenda.

On Sept. 1 council voted to accept Republic Services as the community’s new waste hauler, because its sealed bid was lower than Waste Management’s.

The contract is for three years, beginning Dec. 1, with an option to renew for another three years.

Flag wavers

The first home football of the season - and it rained. Ada High School marching band flags don't seem to mind, however. CLICK HERE to watch a video of the show.
