Sixty-five seniors (including 14 from Apollo Career Center) graduated at Ada High School on a hot and humid Sunday afternoon in the high school gymnasium.

After two choir numbers, Superintendent Suzanne Darmer announced the salutatorian and eight valedictorians.

Retired teacher D. lyn Davis gave the commencement address.

Ada Memorial Day observation moves to 1 p.m. on Monday

The Ada Memorial Day services on Monday will be held at a new time this year, 1 p.m. instead of the usual 2 p.m.

The program will be held at the veterans memorial on the east side of Woodlawn Cemetery, with the service at Preston Cemetery east of Alger immediately following. The services will be held at the VFW Post 9381, at 2147 SR 81, if the weather is inclement.

Jay Conley will be the speaker this year. The program will begin with a 21-gun salute. Members of the Ladies Auxiliary will place wreaths in memory of those who have served in America's past wars.

Forest beekeeper buzzing with business

By Amy Eddings

The phrase "busy as a bee" applies not only to bees this time of year, when flowering plants are in bloom, but to beekeepers, too.  Just ask Michael Lablonski of Mike's Bees and Honey of neighboring Forest.

"I've probably got 40 to 50 orders for queens going back to last year that I've got to fill," he told the Ada Icon. The long, cool spring, he said, has meant sluggish hives, and that, in turn, has meant fewer bees, fewer queens and less honey.  This week's warm weather has been welcomed by bee and beekeeper alike.

"It's absolutely fabulous that things are finally going better," he said.
