Apply now for Community Foundation grants and scholarships

Following the organization's quarterly meeting on February 4, the Hardin County Community Foundation announced that it will offer $227,000 in grants and scholarships in spring 2025. 

The grants to non-profit organizations in the county will support programs and projects in the fields of education, youth services, recreation, arts and culture, social services, and civic and community development.

The foundation is accepting applications through February 28. Forms are on the foundation’s website, www.hardinfoundation.org/

The Grants Committee will review applications. Groups and organizations awarded grants will be notified in late April 2025.

Grant funds are generated by earnings on the foundation’s assets. Total assets of the foundation were at $14,031,499 through Dec. 31, 2024. The foundation received $17,975 through its annual fund drive.

APL Bake Off is back

Calling all bakers and chocolate aficionados! The Ada Public Library is hosting its annual Chocolate Bake Off on February 15 at noon. Bring your best dessert that features chocolate as the star of the show! Winners receive a Dietsch's chocolate treat.

Ada students on Apollo honor roll for 2nd quarter of 2024-2025

Congratulations to the following Ada students who have been recognized on the Apollo Career Center honor roll for the second quarter of 2024-2025: 

A  Honor Roll: Caleb Nash, Lydia Phillips

A/B Honor Roll: Aedyn Beckwith, Alainee Buxton, Jude Griffin, Ashley Hevlin, Tyrese McGraw, Evan Miller, Brody Rister, Braden Smith

Currently 30 Ada students are enrolled at the career center, which serves all or part of six counties. A total of 950 high students are currently enrolled in high school programs.

Weekend Doctor: Preventing falls outside your home

Did you know that one in three visits to the emergency room is due to a fall? These visits require, on average, a four-day hospital stay. They also result in some level of loss of independence and decreased quality of life. Many people who experience a fall become more afraid of the likelihood of falling, which results in them being less active and at a higher risk for nursing home placement. 

There are two primary reasons that people experience a fall. Physiological factors involve a decrease in strength and balance, while environmental factors involve our physical surroundings and play a role in whether we are able to do things independently and safely. The good news is that there are some very meaningful changes that you can make to your home and routine in order to decrease your chances of falling. You will be surprised by the home hazards that are considered dangerous or a contributing factor leading up to a fall. Take this opportunity to commit to at least one change in order to make your home safer.

Bulldog wrestlers lose to Bluffton

BLUFFTON – The Ada High School wrestling team lost a dual match at local rival Bluffton 46-12 Wednesday, February 5.

Winners for the Bulldogs were seniors Liam Vieira (144 lbs.) and Landon Simon (215), both by pin.

Ada competes in the Blanchard Valley Conference championship meet Saturday, February 15 at Van Buren.

Liberty-Benton won the BVC title last year, followed by Elmwood in second.

Ada girls basketball downed by Rockets

ADA - The Ada High School girls basketball team got off to a slow start, rallied but ultimately lost 61-40 to Blanchard Valley Conference foe Pandora-Gilboa on February 4.

Ada fell behind 20-2 but battled back within six points at one point early in the third quarter. The Bulldog girls cut the deficit to nine twice in the fourth period, but could get no closer.

The Bulldogs were outscored only 24-23 over the middle quarters. P-G won the first and fourth periods by a combined total of 37-17.

The Ada girls fell to 4-17 overall and finished 0-10 in the BVC after the loss that ended a two-game win streak. The contest concluded their first campaign in the new league.
