This past week I just returned to work from participating in a two-week Sheep and Agriculture Study Tour of New Zealand. As I write this edition of the Hardin County Agriculture and Natural Resources Update, soybean harvest is nearly done in the county and 89% complete statewide. Corn harvest is about halfway completed, with progress being slowed down by high moisture corn that needs to be dried.

HARDIN COUNTY__During the month of September 2023, Extension volunteer rainfall reporters received an average of 0.22 inches of rain. The least rain for this month, 0.00 inches, was reported in both Liberty and Marion Townships, as measured by Phil Epley and Mark Lowery respectively. The most rain reported during the month, 0.61 inches, was reported in Goshen Township by John Brien.

During the same month last year, an average of 2.92 inches of rain fell. The rainfall recorded in September over the past ten years averaged 2.93 inches.

CORRECTION: The meeting was the second in the 2023 but they are not bi-annual. January and July meetings were cancelled.

The Ada Community Improvement Corporation held its second meeting for 2023 at the Ada Depot in October. The meeting is an opportunity for board members and stakeholders to discuss developments in the village and to conduct business “for the sole purpose of advancing, encouraging, and promoting industrial, economic, commercial and civic development of our Ada Community and Area.”

OSU Extension Educator, Hardin County

Fourteen Ohio sheep producers, industry representatives, and an OSU Extension Educator visited five different Michigan Lamb Marketing and Dry Lot/Confinement Sheep Operations the weekend of Saturday, September 30 and Sunday, October 1, 2023. This year’s tour was jointly sponsored by the Ohio Sheep Improvement Association and Hardin County OSU Extension. In addition to enjoying the fall color of the trees, producers were able to ask questions of the operators and see these farms as part of this tour in the state of Michigan. Topics included facilities, production, management, and marketing of lamb.
