Weekend Doctor: June is Pride month

Welcome to June, the beginning of summertime and Pride month. Pride celebrates the LGBTQIA2S+ community and the folks within that community. LGBTQIA2S+ is an acronym meaning lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, asexual or agender, and two-spirit; the plus allows space for a wide spectrum of sexual orientations and gender identities. Pride celebrates the LGBTQIA2S+ community in a positive, affirming way, promoting dignity, equality and visibility. 

The roots of the gay rights movement started in the 1900s, but Pride, as a movement, was ignited by and is in memory of the Stonewall Riots of 1969. The Stonewall Inn, a bar in the Greenwich area of New York City, was known to serve gay people, which at the time was illegal, drawing the police’s attention. In June 1969, the patrons, community and activists fought back.

Invitation to become F&M royalty candidates

Organizers of the Farmers & Merchants Picnic--scheduled for Sunday August 10--have an invitation for Ada youngsters:

"Calling all Ada parents! Do you have a kiddo that would like to run for F&M royalty? This is the year to sign up!!!

"We will be crowning a King, Queen, Prince AND Princess!! PreK-6 will be our Prince and Princess and 7th grade-12 will be crowned our King and Queen!!!

Ada kicks off summer June 1-2

The Ada Area Chamber of Commerce has coordinated "Kick Off Summer" activites on June 1-2. On Saturday, The Ada Public Library kicks off Summer Read and many downtown businesses will have activities and treats for children. On Sunday, from 4:00-8:00 p.m. the free Punt, Pass and Kick competition at ONU's Dial-Roberson Stadium is open to children ages 6-15. 

Ada’s Brown 6th in hurdles at state meet

DAYTON – Ada High School senior ace Jackson Brown came in sixth in the 110-meter high hurdle finals race at the Div. III state track and field meet in Dayton’s Welcome Stadium Friday evening, May 31.
