Sweet tooth: Sugar substitutes and your heart

The idiom “sweet tooth” describes an individual who craves chocolate, candies, cake, cookies or sweet desserts. Healthcare professionals including dentists warn of the dangers of too much sugar. These include heart disease, obesity, diabetes and tooth decay. An option to reduce sugar intake is a sugar substitute. 

In 1963, the FDA approved the sugar substitute xylitol as a food additive to help patients with diabetes. Xylitol has been approved in 35 countries as a replacement for sugar. Xylitol is a 5-carbon sugar alcohol found naturally in small quantities in fruits and vegetables. When xylitol is used to enhance the sweetness of food, the levels can be 1000-fold higher than those found in nature.

Fireworks will reflect "Pride of Ada" spirit on June 29

On Saturday, June 29, the fourth annual Pride of Ada Fireworks will take place at approximately 9:45 p.m. in Ada’s War Memorial Park. Fireworks will launch from baseball fields on the east side of the park.

Arthur Harold Norberg taught at Ada High School

Arthur Harold Norberg, age 88, of Lima and formerly of Ada, passed away on Wednesday, June 26, 2024 at Mercy Health-St. Rita’s Medical Center, Lima.

Four ONU women named to Academic All-District At-Large Team

ADA __ Ohio Northern fifth-year senior fifth-year senior Elizabeth Graham (Dayton/Carroll), seniors Grace Honigford (West Chester/Lakota East) and Gabby Monastra (Wooster) and sophomore Rylie Kocik (Cicero, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) were named to the 2024 Women's Academic All-District At-Large Team by College Sports Communicators.
