No. 5 women's basketball clinches share of OAC regular season title with 70-58 win over Heidelberg

Junior Cenzie Yoder and senior Joanna Snyder each posted double-doubles as the No. 5 Ohio Northern women's basketball team posted a 70-58 win over Heidelberg on Wednesday at the ONU Sports Center.

With the win, the Polar Bears now stand at 21-1 on the season and 15-0 in OAC play, while the Student Princes fall to 5-17, 1-14.

The win clinches a share of the OAC regular season championship, the first for ONU since the 1987-88 season.

"It has been our number one goal all season to win the OAC championship," said head coach Michele Durand. "We will now look to capture the title outright."

Branden Rushton joins 1,000-point club as men's basketball posts 76-68 victory at Heidelberg

Junior Branden Rushton became the 37th member of Ohio Northern's 1,000-point club in a 76-68 men's basketball victory at Heidelberg on Wednesday night at Sierberling Gymnasium.

The Polar Bears improve to 11-11 overall and 7-8 in Ohio Athletic Conference action, while the Student Princes fall to 9-13, 4-11.

Rushton finished with 17 points and now has 1,004 for his career.

Junior Dominique Royal scored a season-high 20 points and junior Jared Horstman added 17 points for ONU.

ONU’s True North Public Relations firm garners first place

Ohio Northern University’s student-run firm, True North Public Relations, took first place in a competition sponsored by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) to promote state parks in the Northern Ohio area.

The competition called for teams to create promotional video and audio spots to be used regionally by the department. The students who participated on the project will be recognized at a ceremony on Feb. 20.

Matt Comer, wildlife biologist with the ODNR, stated, “This is the first time I have been asked to organize a venture like this, and working with the ONU team on this project has been a wonderful experience.

ONU to present discussion of ‘Peace Corps: What it Means to Serve’

Ohio Northern University presents 2006 graduate Amanda Horvath, who will discuss “Peace Corps: What It Means to Serve,” in the Dicke Forum on Sunday, Feb. 17, at 7 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.

Horvath joined the Peace Corps in 2007 and, as part of her Peace Corps duties, spent 30 months in Paraguay working with Paraguayan teachers and developing extracurricular programs for children. While in Paraguay, she formed a youth eco-club with a core group of about a 10 high school and college-aged students.

Janis S. Gipson, 1947 - 2013

Janis S. Gipson, 65, died at 4:53 p.m. Feb. 5, 2013, at Shawnee Manor Nursing Home.

She was born Nov. 9, 1947, in Hippo, Ky., to Raleigh and Trilbie Laferty Ousley, who preceded her in death. On Oct. 14, 1984, she married Bryson Gipson Sr., who survives in Lima.

Mrs. Gipson had been a nurse's aide at Lima Manor Nursing Home. She was a member of Mount Zion Old Regular Baptist Church, McGuffey.
