The Ada Exempted Village Schools Board of Education met on July 18 with a nine-page agenda and new Superintendent Julie Simmons.

High School principal Dan Lee made a report to the board including a thank you to Ken Jochims for his work finding athletics officials, which has made scheduling games increasingly difficult. Lee also gave a shout out to Lindsay (Walden) Hollar, AHS graduate and current Ada Area Chamber of Commerce director, for highlighting Ada students at the recent ribbon cutting event at the Wilson Football Factory. Lieutenant Governor Jon Husted visited with Ada HS and JH football teams.

Lee also introduced Bleu Arbuthnot, who has been hired as Elementary School guidance counselor.

Lance Dearth, Facility Maintenance Coordinator, reported on work in progress, including preschool classroom and air conditioning projects in the Administration building and gyms. Dearth said everything is on schedule. He hopes to have access for preschool teachers by August 5-6. He also reported that large portions of main building roofing is done.

Board member Ted Griffith made a motion to separate item I of Superintendent’s Recommendations–Supplemental contracts for athletics–but did not receive a second. Griffith did not support hiring an assistant golf coach. As a result, Griffith voted no on all Superintendent Recommendations, which passed, 4-1.

In her Superintendent’s Comment, Julie Simmons noted that the State of Ohio Rapback fingerprinting and background check is now required for more individuals, including cafeteria workers, bus drivers and custodians. Discussion with the board posed the question of when this might apply to volunteer youth coaches who are in the building.

The next meeting of the school board will be at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 15. The meeting is earlier to accommodate the Open House which takes place from 6:30-8:00 p.m. that evening.
