Charles E. Coates was a farmer

Charles "Charlie" E. Coates, 84, passed away June 20, 2024, at Vancrest of Ada.

Charlie was born July 23, 1939 in Jackson Township, Allen County to Lewis and Martha (Fisher) Coates who preceded him in death. On November 17, 1957 he married Alice "Jane" (Zimmerman) Coates who survives. 

Charlie graduated from Lafayette Jackson High School in 1957, where he earned the FFA State Farmers degree and served as state FFA reporter for the Ohio State FFA Association for one year following graduation.

He was a lifelong member of Zion Lutheran Church of Lafayette where he served in many leadership positions. Charlie served many years on the Farm Service Association and the Farmers Elevator Board of Directors. He was a member of the Allen County Farm Bureau and the Ohio Corn and Wheat Growers Association. 

Charlie loved to take road trips, especially through the Upper Great Lakes Region. He loved his high school sweetheart, his children and grandchildren, and all of the family gatherings that took place. His passion in life was to serve his Lord through farming.

He is survived by his wife, Alice "Jane" Coates of Harrod; two children, Kevin D. (Regina) Coates of Harrod and Denise E. (Thomas) McDaniel of Harrod; three siblings, Roger Coates of West Newton, OH, Thomas (Joan) Coates of Pemberville, OH, and Rose (Bruce) Roberson of West Newton, OH; three grandchildren, Ryan (Elizabeth) Coates, Alexis (Travis) Tucker, Derek (Heather) McDaniel; two step-grandchildren, Jessika (Brian) Ackerman, and Alexis Winnings; three great-grandsons, Charlie, Henry, and Simon Coates; two great-granddaughters, Reagan and Karsyn Tucker; and two step-great-grandchildren, Ella and Eli Ackerman. 

Charlie was preceded in death by a brother, Alan Coates; great-granddaughter, Ruth Coates; and sister-in-law, Marcille Coates.

Charlie’s services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, June 29, 2024 at Zion Lutheran Church of Lafayette with Pastor Ryan Cordle officiating. Burial will be in West Point Cemetery at a later date. Visitation will be Saturday, June 29, 2024 from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the church.
