The Ada High School varsity baseball team lost 27-1 to visiting Columbus Grove in their annual Northwest Conference Bulldog matchup Monday evening, April 10, playing at home at War Memorial Park.
Ada fell to 2-3 overall and 0-2 in the NWC with the run-rule shortened, five-inning defeat. Ranked 20th in the state, CG improved to 6-2 and 1-0 in the league after the win.
“If we are not going to make the routine plays each game, it will be a struggle to compete,” said Ada head coach Toby Smith.
The host Bulldogs trailed 4-0 early as several errors helped Grove jump to a quick lead. CG pushed eight runs across in the second to blow it open, 12-0.
Five more Grove runs in the third made it 17-0.
Ada scored in the home third. Roman Snyder singled, followed by a hit from Levi Green. Max Puerto drove in the lone Ada run with a fielder’s choice to plate Snyder.
Grove poured it on with 10 runs in the fourth to put the game well out of reach.
Renner led CG with four runs and four RBI, including a three-run triple.
Ada got out-hit, 14-8. Both teams stranded eight baserunners. Ada made 12 errors leading to 11 runs, compared to none by CG. Grove also drew 11 walks.
Green and Sutherly each collected two hits to lead the Ada offense. Zach Neiswander smacked a double. Levi Sousley and Spencer Wall and each added a hit. Snyder contributed a hit and the Ada run.
Sousley took the pitching loss as Ada used six hurlers. Sutherly pitched 1 2/3 innings of no-run baseball to end the game.

Ada plays a non-league game at Riverdale (4-1) Tuesday. The Bulldogs then journey to Bluffton to take on the rival Pirates (3-3, 1-0 NWC). The Pirates shut out Delphos Jefferson 3-0 Mo0nday.
Ada hosts county foe Ridgemont (5-2) Friday, then visits Botkins (4-3) Saturday. The Gophers lost to Waynesfield 6-1 Monday evening.
