You can watch ONU alumna compete in Olympic trials

The race, to take place in Eugene, Oregon, will be aired June 24 at 7 p.m. PST (10 p.m. EST) on NBC

Icon viewers can watch Ohio Northern University alumna and assistant coach Emily Richards compete for membership on the U.S. Olympic Track and Field Team this Thursday.

Richards will be competing at the 2021 United States Olympic Trials in the 800-meter run’s first round. The race, to take place in Eugene, Oregon, will be aired June 24 at 7 p.m. PST (10 p.m. EST) on NBC.

Richards has athletically distinguished herself for years. She is a 9-time NCAA champion and 13-time All-American. To qualify for the Olympic Trials, she ran a 2:02.10 at the Stumptown Twilight Meet on June 3 in Portland, Oregon. The qualifying mark for this year’s trials in the 800 is 2:02.50.

Mike Barnes was retired from Westinghouse

Michael W. “Mike” Barnes, 76, passed away on Monday, June 21, 2021, at 9:20 a.m. at his residence in Harrod.

He was born on June 30, 1944, in Lima, Ohio, to the late Dale W. and Jeanette (Drury) Barnes. On May 29, 1964, Mike married the love of his life Carolyn A. Plummer and she survives in Harrod.

Randy Cole 1963 - 2021

Randy L. Cole, 57, passed away on Saturday, June 19, 2021, at 12:04 p.m. at his residence in Alger.

He was born on Aug. 12, 1963, in Lima, Ohio, to the late Alan E. and Bonnie (Neifer) Cole. Randy married Sherri K. Shirk on March 2, 2001 and she survives in Alger.

Randy worked for Celina Glass. 

Also surviving are his children: Wesley (Katelyn Loveless) Shaw of Ada and Lexi (Kyle) Mullins of Alger; four grandchildren; three brothers: Craig (Toni) Cole of Hubert, N.C., Rex (Sharon) Cole of Westminster and Chris (Rexanne) Cole of Dola; and a sister, Amy (Jeff) Sheldon of Ada.

Bessie Risner retired after 40 years at Hardin Memorial Hospital

Bessie L. Risner, 83, passed away on Saturday, June 19, 2021, at 7:30 p.m. at Marion General Hospital.

She was born on March 21, 1938, in Goodloe, Kentucky, to the late Elisha and Mallie Marie (Centers) Hicks. On June 30, 1956, Bessie married Rev. Homer “Russel” Risner and he preceded her in death on Sept. 23, 1987.

Bessie retired from Hardin Memorial Hospital after working for over 40 years as a nursing assistant. She was a member of the High Street Freewill Baptist Church of Ada.
